ByAllTheLawsOfMagicForbidden
Through the course of many journeys, I discover that my soul gems sometimes tend to "wander off" from my inventory. For example, I "borrowed" the soul gems from the desk in the Balmorra Mage's Guild and used one to enchant a daedric dai-katana. Later, upon enchanting another weapon, I discover I have no soul gems. "Odd," I think, "they were there a minute ago. Perhaps the Mage guild hired several thieves to steal them back from me. Or maybe they're magical 'teleporting' soul gems. Or maybe they grew appendages, crawled out of my pack, and ran off to steal a Nord's clothes somewhere..."(Misc: btw, does that witch exist anywhere?) So I "borrow" a few more soul gems from other places. Over time, they disappear. I start hearing a random "clink" that sounds like I equipped a ring or the machine that goes "ping". Anyway, my mind has now associated the "clink" to loosing a soul gem, but I'm not quite sure if they're dropping or... anything? Not on the ground... it's all very confusing. As far as I can tell, soul gems don't degrade (correct me if I'm wrong, please). But my troubles continue... On top of this, I've never successfully trapped a soul in a gem--frankly, I blame the universe. I: "successfully" cast a soul-trapping spell on a target, kill that target within the time limit, and no empty soul gem receives a soul. I've done it dozens of times. On NPC commoners. On summoned Golden Saints. Nothing. I don't know why the gods are tormenting me so. Am I wrong here? Is this a game mechanic? Or a known glitch? Or am I doing something incorrectly? I really have no clue and I'd love to enchant an item again one day... Like my "Ranger's Vengeance", daedric dai-katana that does 70+ straight frost damage. Muahahahahaha... ermm. So... how's everything going with you guys? hmm?
PierreBeauregard
I'm not sure if I can help you with your soulgem problems, but I can eplain to you about the "plink" sound you hear while exploring or after using a siltstrider. No need to worry (it used to freak me out too), it's the game telling you that an item has fully recharged. Also, if you "borrowed" soul gems from galbeidir in the balmora mages' guild, you won't be able to use her as an enchanter, because every soul gem you picked up since you hijacked her soul gems will be marked as "stolen" by her. I don't know why this happens, some bug in the game. So if you try to enchant something by her, all your soul gems will be reported stolen and you'll have to claim them by tacking them back from an evidence chest. If you enchant from another mage in a different city's guild, you won't have this problem. Other than perhaps being caught stealing, I can't think of any other reason that you're losing soul gems. Are you using (or have you used) any mods that modify the enchanting system? Then that could be a problem. Or your game is bugged :)
Malchik
For some reason human beings in the game have no souls. Therefore you will never get them in soul gems. Secondly Golden saints will only fit into Grand Soul Gems and Azura's star. Are you carrying these when you try soul trap on these higher level beasties? And for your BTW there are witches in the game (one in Falensarano entrance level and a couple of others). These are NPC's who, asked their trade, say 'witch'. IIRC you come across three naked Nords complaining of witches. In one, no witch appears; in one the chances are the Nord was drunk and disorderly, the woman he claims to be a witch is a healer. Only with Botrir and his axe do you find a witch as part of the quest.
Xeniorn
I think disappearing soulgems must be a bug. I "borrowed" soulgems from galbedir too, and they all disappeared, I didn't use them, sell them nor I was caught. They just disappeared. BTW: thx on the info bout the "pings", it was really freakin' me out.
MDH Weaponeer
It's possible, however, to mod the game into letting you trap NPC's. Mournhold ordinators etc. should be worth alot!
4n+13[]D0p
Thats funny. I always 'borrow' those sould gems in her desk and they have never been stolen back, teleported, fell out of my inventory or grown appendages, ran off and stole a Nords clothing The mod MDH Weaponeer is talking about sound really cool. MWAHAHA! I STEAL YOUR SOUL!!!!
Eliah
Some mods can cause unstable and unpredictable effects on prior games, or on 'set' objects, such as the soulgems that the Mage's Guild enchanters own. Check to make sure you're not running anything that might change either the properties of souls/soulgems or the Mage's Guild. Other then that, there's basically only two other ways to make a soulgem disappear. Using them by enchating, whether it works or not, skill or NPC based, will cause the gem to be used up and disappear. You stole it and were arrested. And, technically, I would say that the NPCs don't have -trappable- souls. Perhaps protected by the Aedra from being magically captured against their will(there are instances in books where a mage has put his own soul into an object - see the staff of Magnus or Umbra, can't remember which), or there just aren't big enough soulgems. Of course that's just speaking from a game concept viewpoint. In practice NPCs just don't have a soul value. And yes, to trap a soul you need to have a soulgem with enough capacity to hold it. One thing to note is that if you have other soulgems of the same kind with a stolen one, they all retain the 'marked as stolen' thing. I know since after I was arrested once, all of my grand soulgems were gone. I know of only one soulgem I stole(it had a soul when I stole it, so it wasn't stacked) that I had at that time, and all of my grand soulgems were taken. PierreBeauregard
I think we should call it "soul gem disease". If you have a soul gem marked as stolen, it spreads to other soul gems. Even if you get rid of the orignal gem, the rest of them will continue to amrk others as stolen. Anyone know of a cure?
4n+13[]D0p
There would have to be new stuff to make potions, for the cure to the dreded soul gem disease
prinsallan
Just try this: Walk around in Balmora and open all crates, taking all green "low" gems you can find.Head out South from Balmora til you find a low creature, like a rat or something. Cast soul trap on him and kill him within the timelimit. Now you should have a lesser soul gem with a rat in it in inventory. If you dont, its a mod-problem. Just remove em all and try capping the rat again. If it works now, Add your mods one by one and cap the rat each time. After a while, you maybe miss the cap of the rat again and then you know what mod is causing troubles. Turn it off and Turn all other onse on. Now it should work.Gl Hf :D
