LE Main quest delayed

Looking for a mod that lets me gain some levels though secondary quests before the crossing the border events kick in.

I think our dragonborn is but a puppy fighting dragons in the actual game, and I would like a alternative start where you can roleplay untill , i.e you receive a letter from someone to travel to the border...you get there, get attacked by imperials... fadeout... vanilla start starts.

There is a popular mod called Alternate Start - Live Another Life http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9557 which might be to your liking.

 

You might also be interested in the mod I'm working on. As of now ,I don't plan on delaying the execution scene, but it will delay the quest in which Farengar sends you after the dragon stone, so you can spend some time leveling up and exploring. Its pretty illogical for the Jarl to send you on a dangerous missions, and assume you're some kind of badass, just because you barely survived one dragon attack and were kind enough to warn him. Its still a work-in-progress, but I'll most likely set it up so that the Bleak Fall Barrow quest is started by a courier's letter, on condition that some time (e.g. two weeks) has passed AND you are at least a certain level.

I'd say other than a mod, the best thing you could do is go the OPPOSITE direction than where you saw that dragon fly once you leave the cave. Stay away from Riverwood/Whiterun until you have developed your character - which can be kinda hard to do though if you are a Nord desperately wanting to be a Companion.
