More realistic gameplay and atmosphere

Hello everybody

I enjoy playing skyrim since a few weeks, but the more I discover the game and develop my avatar, more and more things I find which I believe could be improved to create a better gaming experience.

One of these things is the interaction between the avatar and the rest of the game world, where it seems that very little has changed since the days of TES IV: Oblivion.

clothing

What you choose as armour or clothing for your avatar is almost always not affecting the quests, the interaction with NPCs or how the avatar can move around in skyrim.

For example: If you choose to run into a jarl's hall, in full armour and with drawn sword, nobody would say a thing, let alone try to stop you. For a better game atmosphere there could be something like a code of conduct, a jarl for example, would not allow you to address him or her, as long as you have a weapon in your hand or your helmet still on. Some jarls, or other important people, could even go so far as to force you to leave your weapons at the entrance to their place.

Some outfits should also have a general effect on NPCs. If you choose to wear a deadric armour for example and travel to a town, a logical reaction of NPC civilians would be to run away and town guards would try to stop you. Next step would be that NPCs “learn” and adopt to your outfit, so that scare-off effects would not repeat endlessly.

Some further ideas for general effects of your avatar's outfit could be:

  • you can only address some people if you wear the right outfit.
  • What your avatar wears affects the options in the dialogues.
  • In some outfits your avatar would be denied access to certain areas, towns (e.g. no access to imperial strongholds in stormcloak, deadric and fornsworn armour) or houses (at least not by the usual access way, your avatar should still have the option to sneak or break in places).

Another thing about outfit is its relevance to quests. Apart from the mission inside the Thalmor embassy I never saw a quest where outfit really matters, and even there it was only a brief thing to enter the embassy.

Provided that your avatar would never be totally quiet and a perfect sneaker as long as he wears heavy armour and iron-plated boots, quests could be designed in which it would result in different outcomes, depending on whether you choose to sneak in with dark cloak and dagger or whether you decide to go fully armoured. (“Thanks for killing all those bandits in their camp with your sword and explosive fireballs, but as some of them saw and heard you coming, they managed to destroy the map to their primary stronghold where the real treasure is, so that we shall never find it now.”)

Moving around

The freedom to move around in Skyrim as you wish is an important aspect of the game and I don't want to miss that. Still I think it should be more of a challenge to travel throughout Skyrim, and one of the most frequent obstacles one will encounter while travelling is water. There are bridges in the game, but actually they are useless, as you can cross any river or lake, no matter how strong the current, heavy your load or cold the water. Only the slaughterfish could prevent someone to swim through a river, if they where not so weak.

This could be another aspect of clothing. If you wish to swim you should have to take off most of your clothes or at least the heavy armour or drown with it. Cold water, like the icy waters at the northern shores of Skyrim could provide another challenge with your avatar freezing to death in short time.

I still have more ideas for a more realistic gameplay but for now it shall be enough and I would like to know what others thing about the changes I propose and how these things could be realised through modding. Maybe somebody is even working already on things like I discriped?

I'm currently starting to devlop my modding skills, but at this time they are as rudimentary as they can be.

Thanks for your feedback.

Some good points that I have noticed as well:

There is no combat in the water. If you play an Argonian (an amphibious race) surely you would fight just as well in or out of water.

The cities are almost devoid of intelligent life. The NPC's that ARE there are almost Zombie like. Lets have crouds of people all doing things with a purpose, even if that is just doing the weekly shopping for supplies, the local thief picking peoples pockets etc.

I shall end there as I will start to ramble on if not.

Realism is very lacking in this game (Realism as far as the fantasy game can go I mean)
