AFT causing CTD

Hey guys, i already made a reply to another thread, but it might also be worth an own topic:

I have 270 mods active on my Skyrim Special Edition and had to cut down so i dont get over the 255 plugins limit set by NMM (i know its 'only' a warning). First question: Anyone experience with this? Is it safe to have more mods or should i cut down when i want new mods?

 

But the main question here is the following:

My Problem: My game kept crashing, first only once a day, then it got more often until yesterday i couldnt even play this savegame, cause it was crashing 10 seconds after loading. I cleared the savegame with Re.Save, checked load order with LOOT, reinstalled the mod and did other stuff, nothing worked... I disabled all the mods to find the error and it ran smoothly (disgusting to see a modded character without mods...), so it had to be a mod, then i enabled them again one by one and tracked down the bad mod, it turned out to be "Amazing Follower Tweaks". I installed all the mods except AFT and it worked perfectly fine. If i enable AFT, it keeps crashing again.

 

problem is: i have many followers and also think an adventurer group is more "immersive" and fun than just one lame follower all the time... I cant play without AFT, i need it.

How can i fix this? Is there a possible replacement?

first of all , the 255 plugin limit isn't only a warning

the way the game works , you can't load more than 255 plugins

so it's not a warning . if you try going beyond that limit , some plugins won't load , which will surely cause issues (from some mods not working , to the game not loading at all)

 

as for your game crashing , it is well known that setting an improper load order , or installing too many mods could cause the game to not be stable in the long run

so even if for the first few hours you get no issues , the issues might start creeping in after a few hours , and maybe even make the game completely unplayable after a few more hours

the start point , rate of increase and total failure time differ between all users , but if you mess up your mod list , you are almost guaranteed to suffer from issues , and they will mostly get worse with time

 

as for your problems with AFT , maybe some of your mods don't work with AFT (I honestly don't know , nor will I bother glancing at your load order . if you even close to the plugin limit , you should seriously reconsider what you are doing . start by removing any of the mods that aren't a 'must have' for you , and try to build a stable basis for the game . after this works , you can try to add a few extra mods , but I would try to keep it under 150 plugins . if you must , you could try to use Merge Plugins , but that will require more knowledge and experience) . there are several follower management mods , though not all of them seem to work properly , and this also depends on the other mods you wish to use

whatever the case , you seem to have your work cut out for you

see if you can start to fix the basic issues , and afterwards if you require more help (or more specific help) , feel free to ask

That's a bad idea, especially if one doesn't know how to do it properly.

 

A way better idea is to start learn how Wrye Bash works and one feature that can be done in Wrye Bash is to (ab)use the bashed patch, just to load more than 255 esm/esp by merging some mods into the bashed patch.

 

Note, not every mod can be merged into the bashed patch, but AFAIK smaller mods shouldn't cause a problem when merging mods into the bashed patch.

I wholeheartedly agree that using Merge Plugins isn't recommended for beginners

It's a great tool , but it requires knowledge to use properly (as I stated) . it's definitely not something I would recommend with a straight face , especially in the case of a new mod user

but if the user can't get rid of enough mods , it is a good alternative to use , and there are great tutorials on how to use it properly (so the user can learn how to do so , even as a beginner)

 

but I agree that starting with a bashed patch is a much easier start , and a great advice in general

Next thing i try is just AFT and some follower mods, that are active, like sofia and sassy teen girls, nothing else.

Lets see, i might get rid of one or another mod... just see if that fixes it...

Doesnt work, i started Skyrim SE now with only AFT and 3 other mods so it makes sense (2 follower mods) and it crashed again. So its really AFT causing the problem, not the too many mods, just AFT and also interestingly just this savegame.

Any suggestions what to do now? I also reduced my mod list a bit already... but i still have 216 Plugins i cant live without...

let me guess

you've haven't started a new save to try and test these 4 mods , right? if so , you've deactivated mods from an existing save file , so you should expect problems if not outright crashing upon loading that save

so try starting a new character with just these mods active , and test it around to see if it works properly

As i said, i also dont have Problems with the other saves, its just this one savegame.
The other seem to work just fine. Also its just this one mod. I think about getting another multiple follower mod just forthis savegame and save on a different location and see if that fixes it...
