Advice on how to identify cause of random CTD?

Any help would be greatly appreciated-

I get seemingly random CTD's, seems like almost always when wandering around outside. Sometimes it is when I go through a door transitioning areas (requiring a load screen). Is it a reasonable assumption that it's a problem with something that spawns randomly, so it happens when I go into a new area and trigger spawns?

It's been happening for a while so it's not my most recent mods. I've just been living with it but I'm finally motivated to try and solve it.

Can anyone share methods or ideas to help me track it down, so I can either fix the broken/missing items or remove/update the guilty mod(s)?

I know I should probably fix this load order, but I'm afraid... When I've tried before once or twice it caused the game to quit working altogether, and I had to revert to a saved plugins file to play again. Any advice there would be great, too.

Thanks.

Okay, what I'm going to offer may not fix those glitches, but might free up some of the mod slots you have.

1. Doombased's weapons were put into a pack a while back, so that may save a few of the 256 you've got to work with.

2. There is a guide over on Bethesda.net (if that's misspelled, apollogies) that covers in general what should be where in your load order and my best advice is use the export and import options in NMM to allow you to more easily move those mods around in a text file (do note that if you use a pound sign (#) in front of a line and it doesn't have .esp on the end, the import tool will ignore that line; great for helping you keep track of where those mods need to go and if done properly you can keep the extra files a mod uses together with it to make it easier to keep track of all the pieces).

3. If you haven't checked these out yet, Gopher has videos on Youtube covering how to work with NMM and he just did a review of Vortex recently (and I would keep an eye on it, as that's what will replace NMM once it gets much further along as the devs are busy with it).

4. Also on the Youtube front Paul of the Skooled Zone has been doing a no mods shop class covering how to do a lot of building without mods, including dealing with the powerlines normal distance (he's got a trick that can run them very far, almost across the whole settlement, worth watching).

4. Some people have had issues getting CBBE working, so there may be some bugs just waiting to spring up on you, but do check for updates to some of your mods and F4SE (the script extender) did update a bit ago to work with Fallout 4, that and the unofficial patch should help long term (I don't see the latter in your list, so definitely fix that).

Hope these tips help and while you're at it throw the quick enter and exit for Power Armor, it'll save you a lot of time.

Before you get too far, I did spot the unofficial patch in there, but do check for some updates to those mods and my other tips should help. As to if LOOT might help my results have been poor as it gives me the something went wrong error, so the best I can do is see where it may want some moved and do that myself.

OK, thanks a ton man.

I'm actually not sure if it's a load order problem. If it was, it seems like it would happen all the time at a certain action, no? I have this feeling it's a missing texture or something, that only hits me when whatever it is spawns. But I really have no idea, that's why I was hoping for some methodology to try and track it down.

When I can build up the nerve I'm going to go through and redo my load order based on relatively recent community guides to load orders. I know mine is arbitrary as can be. The main problem I think with my load order is that my settlement menus are stupid mess... Definitely need to fix that.

I also didn't have much luck with LOOT, I'll definitely try that import/export thing.

I've actually chosen not to use F4SE, just because of the issue of the entire game quitting working after an update... But there are some great mods that use it, one day I may cross that bridge too.

Thanks again, definitely appreciate the reply.

Well, if it helps I may have figured out what was going on with all my mods. Apparently NMM has lost track of the virtual links it makes to my main Fallout 4 data folder, and that's why textures and menu items weren't working, so I went through the big pile that is my mod list and added the missing files into my Fallout 4 directly. I was hoping that would get the manager to fix itself, but at least the mods are downloaded in one place so I don't have to hunt all over for them. Had to drop Sparky's controller and pick it up again, but that fixed his key activation so I can store and remove stuff again, even got MCM working with a batch of the other mods, too; so I don't need the holotapes for those quite so much. Still gonna keep'em 'round (no weight and the items sorting mod has them mostly labeled), just in case. As to if Vortex will be where I go next, that's going to wait a while (let them get a few more bugs squashed, just to be safe, I'm on DSL, so it takes a while to grab some mods).
