Quick question. Some mod files missing, others not missing?

Hi all,

Quick question, hopefully. Modlist: https://modwat.ch/u/electric_red/plugins

Alright, so, as you can see in the mod list I followed the instructions in the beginners guide to modding and used SSEdit and Wyre Bash. The game is stable, so far.

Except some meshes and/or textures are missing of added in modded items. I had a dig around the Skyrim files and it seems to be any meshes/textures that are added in as loose (.nif files?) files. The folder where they should be is there, but those folders are empty.

For example, the folders belonging to Scoped Bows were empty, despite me still getting Scoped Bows dropping in game (obviously they were invisible), but the meshes/textures for other modded objects in game are complete. I think the distinction is between the loose files not installing correctly compared to mods that are in a .bsa/.esp file? I think.

Anyway, does anyone know what might have caused this and is there a way for me to fix it without having to manually go in and drag over the right files?

how have you installed the mods? which mod manager are you using?

because it seems like you didn't install the mods properly , if their files are missing

what you should also check is if the files are there but in the wrong folder

for example if you have a Meshes folder inside your Meshes folder , or something of that sort (so the files are there but the path is wrong)

I installed them using NMM.

It does seem like they're not installing via NMM correctly, but the majority of other mods installed via NMM are installed correctly and are working.

For example, here is the file directory for the Talos cloak from Divine Cloaks in my Skyrim game folder. https://i.imgur.com/gHsD1IJ.jpg

NMM shows the mod as installed. https://i.imgur.com/9FMnGpm.jpg

I reinstalled the mod using NMM and the folder remained empty. I deleted the mod from NMM and redownloaded and reinstalled via NMM and the folder is still empty.

I didn't find a Meshes folder with the original Meshes folder. Here is the list of folders within my Meshes folder. https://i.imgur.com/LQ9CaqE.jpg

are you sure you installed the mod properly , with the correct options?

because you need to select one of the two texture options (normal or muted) , and the non HDT meshes

this should install all the files in the correct location

if this is still an issue , see that the mods were downloaded properly (go to the folder where NMM saves downloaded archives , try to open the archive and see if it contains all the files)

this shouldn't be the issue , and I believe NMM would notify you of corrupted archives in such a case , but it's worth a check anyway

Edit: just to be sure , are you running your game through NMM?

As far as I know I installed it correctly. I chose, in the options, Distributed Only > Locational and NPC Distribution > Muted Colors > Patron Gods Patch, since I have the Patron Gods mod too. After that I installed the Divine Cloaks WICO Patch. There wasn't an option to install whichever meshes, but I see the non HDT meshes in the archive. Even though the meshes and textures weren't extracted to the right folder by NMM it still placed the DivineCloaks.esp in the correct place. This is the problem I am having, the .esp are being installed but not some of the textures/meshes for some of the mods.

The mods were downloaded correctly by NMM, here's a picture of the archived files plus the relevant (empty) Skyrim folder. https://i.imgur.com/hZC6slf.jpg

I can fix it manually, by dragging the files from the archive into the correct Skyrim folder but with all the mods I have installed it will be a pain to go through and do it.

Maybe it's an issue that I need to bring up with the NMM team.

And yeah, I'm running it through NMM, a custom launcher SKSE option.

are you running the game through NMM?

the thing is , I tried searching around and found a similar issue reported

what people have mentioned is that NMM now uses a virtual installation folder , where it places files like meshes and textures (while plugins and BSA archives are placed in the game's Data folder)

this means that in order for these resources to be launched into the game , you need to run it through NMM

now , I'm not sure if this is actually the case , as I've used Mod Organizer 1 & 2 for a few years , so I haven't really touched NMM in a long time (at least not for a Bethesda game , where this issue can occur)

so I can't really comment on this myself , but if I were to believe what I've read , it could be the cause of your issues

as for bringing the issue with the NMM team , you should know that NMM isn't being supported any longer

the team is working on a new mod manager called Vortex , which is supposed to take the best aspects of NMM and MO and combine them into an amazing tool

so I really doubt you will get any real support from the NMM devs

I am running it through NMM, yeah.

What did you search for specifically to find other similar issues? If I can't fix it I'll just switch over to MO and start again. I'd really rather not!

Nevermind, I fixed it...

By running as administrator. Sigh. Thanks for all your help! :)

I searched something like "NMM not installing mod properly" (don't remember the exact search query)

and I actually did another search , and found something else that might work

try running NMM as admin . people have reported that this fixes the issue (though not for everyone , so it might not work)

run NMM as admin and reinstall one of the mods , to see if now the files are placed correctly

Yeah, I had to run NMM as admin and reinstall mods.

Reinstalling them has f*#@ed something up along the way, so I'm gonna re-reinstall Skyrim SE and the mods and hopefully everything will be good to go from now on. :) Thank you very much for your help!

no problem

glad we were able to solve it in the end

and google is often your best friend when encountering such issues (you can almost bet that for more general issues , you aren't the first or last to encounter them , and people have usually brought them up and discussed them in detail . so all you really have to do is search , and hopefully you'll find at least one solution that actually works)
