CTD at game start

It has been probably 4-6 months since the last time I touched fallout 4. Recently I decided to pick it back up but the game freezes up and goes black screen within about half a second of starting up. The first thing I did was download the latest edition of script extender and then updated a few mods. When that changed nothing I started disabling mods in the NMM plugins tab. I would try disabling about 10 at a time with again, no effect. At this point I am not sure what to do from here. I had through about a fresh install but not sure how to preserve my mods and how they are set up if I were to do that. Maybe someone has some ideas of what I can try or perhaps a common problem that cropped up in my absence from the game I don't know about? Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: not actually a CTD, instead it locks up, goes black screen and I get a "fallout 4 has stopped working" message. Sorry for the mistake

have you made sure to update the game?

the game has gotten several updates in the past few months , and you need the correct game version for F4SE to work properly

and since it seems like the only factor is time here , it seems like maybe you are trying to run the latest F4SE on the wrong game version (though I'm not sure how the game will react in such a way , like if it will just give an error message or just fail to run at all)

I'm not sure about how to go around saving your mods using NMM , as I'm not familiar with the newer versions of NMM , and how the virtual folders work

however , assuming it works like MO , you should be able to just reinstall the game , and since the mods are saved to a different location they shouldn't be affected

but that depends on the version of NMM you are using , and how it installs mods (I would suggest googling this , as it has probably been discussed many times)

I can help a bit. Try option #2 first if that applies to you.

1. If you are using NMM, click on the gear icon (it will have a tool tip of settings). Once there, go to Fallout 4's tab at the top. The locations you'll see there include where all the archives for your mods were placed when downladed, Fallout's location, and where the scripts for mods with installers are stored (the archives will have these in them, so no worries there). With that main location in hand you can copy your mod archives elsewhere while dealing with that re-install. Once you have things set to new locations, just move the archives back, though you may want to keep the copies elsewhere as a just in case.

2. As to Fallout 4, I have Steam, so Steam updates the game for me (there are read only files here or there as needed). If you also have Steam and have the auto update off, turn that back on this evening and let the game update, that may remove the need for a re-install.

3. Do you have the unofficial patch put in? If not, do put that in, as it fixes a pile of bugs.

Thanks for the help. My steam doesnt give me the option to turn auto updates off, if I could I would have and I wouldnt be dealing with this issue. It all started because of the auto updates, it was working great before hand. Looks like a band new version just hit steam today so Ill have to wait for a new version of script extender to come out to see if that fixes anything.
