Train Car Homes

A simple home with a double bed and a couch (with possibly a small chem station) would be nice.

Actually, three such train car homes would be best:

1. Outside of Quincy

2. By the Nakano House

3. Right outside of Virgil's Cave in the Glowing Sea

First, mad props for your avatar.

Second, this is a great way to get started on a first mod. I was actually in a similar spot, was experimenting with object placement in the CK, never cared for cells, and decided to make a small interiors mod.

Thing is, starting is pretty easy. You can just choose locations somewhere on old railroad tracks that look appealing to you, then go into the CK and copy an existing train cart into that place. Put it there, don't touch anything else. Take off its doors and look for their EditorID in the object window. They should have a variant that ends in "Load" - these are load doors, they are used to teleport the player to somewhere else. Find out the EditorID of the bunker at Big John's Salvage, then create a duplicate of that cell and rename it - you'll use its cell metadata (sound and lighting stuff) as a template for a train cart. Remove everything from that cell, then build the shell (and only that shell) of your train cart in the empty space. Try to stay on the grid and only place stuff that will be common to all of your train car homes - you'll use this cell as a template for the others. Then, create another duplicate of that cell. Make sure you have one of those load doors ready. Decorate the interior of the new non-template cell and then link up both load doors. Presto - do the same for the next interior, repeat until happy.

Some general rules:

  • Don't touch anything in the outside worldspace. No edits allowed, period. Placing new things is fine.
  • Try to not edit things you wouldn't expect your mod to change as an outsider - if you want to release it later.
  • When done in the CK, browse through your esp file with xEdit and look for unnecessary overrides. Remove them.

This is obviously a very high level description and you'll have to learn some things along the way. Still, this is a great chance to make something of your own.
