Game suddenly has unplayable FPS

My game was working fine two days ago when I last played. I normally have a good frame rate everywhere. Today it was about 11 FPS no matter where I went.

Today when I added a mod (Tundra Defense, I've ruled it out by disabling it, and anyway it doesn't affect graphics performance) I noticed LOOT said that the game esm files were not clean even though I cleaned them when I started modding this particular install of the game. I cleaned them again and checked in LOOT - no complaints. Ran the game, unplayable FPS.

What could have happened?

Will try reacquiring the game files and not cleaning them, just to see what happens.

EDIT:

As I expected, reacquiring the game files did not help.

The only other major change I made was I installed SKSE64. I never installed the alpha version. This was a clean install of the latest version. This was when I last played, and the game was fine.

So whatever went wrong must have to do with the game files suddenly needing to be cleaned. When was 1.5.39 released?

Also, tried running the game without SKSE64 and this didn't help. But when I tried that, the game acted like it had no settings and wanted to auto-set video settings. Now, regardless of how I launch the game, it started in maximized windowed mode.

I wonder if I'm observing a bug from SKSE64.

I'm also seeing this problem starting a new game with the current setup.

EDIT2:

Solved by updating the Nvidia drivers. Weird that this happened, though.

Might have something to do with SSE being updated. Following the update I had to redownload the DLL loader and install it again as the update seemed to knock this out. I noticed a drop in frames because SSE fixes was no longer working

Possible the update meant you have to clean the master files again (just speculating as Iâve not checked mine since the update)
