Bashed patch crashes

I'm trying to figure out the correct way to build a bashed patch. This is what I have so far:

Run LOOT.

Sort masters
  1. Run Wrye Bash.
  2. Find the first item with an orange checkbox. Make note of the name of the esp.
  3. Close Wrye Bash.
  4. Run SSEEdit.
  5. In the list that pops up, right-click anywhere and choose "Select none."
  6. In this same list, find the esp you noted in Wrye Bash. Select it.
  7. Wait for the background loader to finish.
  8. Right-click on the esp and select "Sort masters." This will happen instantly.
  9. Close SSEEdit.
  10. A save dialog will appear. Click OK on that.

Repeat the above until there are no more orange checkboxes.

Make bashed patch
  1. Launch Wrye Bash from NMM. For some reason, it starts behind all other windows, so switch to it.
  2. Click OK to dismiss the warning.
  3. You should see a list of your plugins.
  4. The first time you run Wrye Bash, there should be a deselected Bashed Patch at the bottom of the list. Right-click on it and select "Rebuild patch."
  5. Click OK to allow Wrye Bash to deactivate the mods it will include in the bash.
  6. On the next panel, click "Build Patch."
  7. When that's done, click OK on the small box with the yellow background.
  8. Click "Yes" to activate the bashed patch. You'll notice that the plugins that were disabled have a plus sign to indicate they now belong to the bashed patch.
  9. Exit Wrye Bash.
  10. Don't run LOOT. The bashed patch needs to be last.

Until I added the first set of steps, SSE crashed to desktop during the Bethesda logo. Now it crashes to desktop a second after displaying the Skyrim logo - before the main menu has a chance to appear.

I've tried re-enabling one esp at a time but this did not do anything to show me that a particular esp should not be in the bash.

I've tried re-activating all of the deactivated esp's while leaving the bashed patch enabled.

Only when I re-activate all the deactivated esp's and disable the bashed patch can I get my game to actually load and play.

I'd appreciate any advice. Somehow the bash itself is doing something wrong or I've built it wrong. This is a fresh install of the game. On a previous install, I only needed the second set of instructions to make it work.

It turned out to be Valdacil's Item Sorting. It has a lot of patches and many of those have issues with the master esm files not being sorted. Those can't be moved around by NMM or Wrye. I finally just gave up and removed it from my load order, which is a shame because I really like it.
