Shield of Solitude

The Shield of Solitude is the quest reward for stoping Potema and it's a pretty powerfull magic artifact.

The problem is that it looks like a bit of scrap wood with some paint slapped on the front, which doesn't seem appropriate for such a good artifact.

What I'd like to see is a mod that changes it into something better looking. Perhaps an ebony shield with the solitude emblem on the front?

Actually, I'll tell you how to make your own replacer mod for that.

Look in your Data directory. If you don't already have a Meshes directory in it, make on. Go into it. If you don't already have an Armor directory make one. Go into it. Now the final piece, if it doesn't already have a StormCloaks directory, make one. The shield you'll want should be called "shield3rd.nif" in that directory.

So basically, starting from your Skyrim folder, the file you want is "Data\Meshes}Armor\StormCloaks\shield3rd.nif"

Just install some shield mod you like and copy one of the shields in that folder, renaming it to shield3rd.nif

Voila, now you changed the Shield Of Solitude.

Personally I'm partial to my own Templar Shields, especially the ones without a boss, if you want to paste your own heraldry on the face, or the scutum variants in the Armae Legionis mod. But I'm biased there, you know. Do your own search for something YOU like.

Of course, those now don't have the solitude logo. If that bothers you, just get GIMP as a free graphic editor, and the DDS plugin for it, open the texture file for the shield you downloaded and just paste your own logo or crest on the face. It should be pretty obvious which is the back (it has wood) and which is the front (it has some colourful motif). It doesn't even have to be the solitude one. You can get your own heraldry, for example from your favourite medieval duchy or city state, or your fraternity logo, or whatever. Save, that's it.
