Trouble Extracting HDT Hair from Follower Mod?

I love the hair found in the Onean follower mod. The problem, however, is that the hair cannot be downloaded anywhere else. It was made by mixing certain KS hairdos; it's basically the author's unique creation.

 

In the non-HDT hair version of the follower mod (i.e. "Patch for 1.73 or 1.74"), I was able to get the hair working by doing the following:

1. Extracting the hair mesh/texture files from the follower mod.
2. Renaming those files to resemble an existing hair mod.
3. Overwriting the hair mod's files with the ones found in the follower mod.
4. Booting up Skyrim, and selecting the hair that was overwritten. It works perfectly, as shown here:

 

 

 

 

In the HDT version (i.e. "Patch for 1.743 mk2"), I did the exact same thing, but it does not work. Here's a detailed guide I what I did:

Why does the HDT hair not work? What's the easiest way to get it to work on other characters?
