How do I install mods for games manually outside the field that NMM can manage?

I've been trying to install mods for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy and I'v been experiencing difficulties in finding the correct folder in which I should transfer the file to.

generally it depends on the game itself

but you are talking about specific games , and their mods should have installation instructions

 

if you can't find the installation instructions (either in the mod's page , or in a readme inside the downloaded archive) maybe post a link to the mod in question so that we can try and provide more specific assistance (or you could just ask this in the mod's page , that would also work)
