"Skyrim has stopped working" after clicking "Play"

There seems to be a common error for those of us with ATI video cards. Skyrim has been working with all my previous mods, no issues. I upgraded to the new ATI drivers 12.3 last week and yesterday to the beta 12.4 drivers. I tried playing two days ago but Skyrim no longer works. Starting from Nexus Mod Manager, Steam or the SKSE produce the same error. Small black box opens on upper left side of screen and then a windows error box pops up with the message: "Skyrim has stopped working". This seems to only affect Skyrim as Shogun 2 still works. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, ATI HD5870 1GB, AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU, 8GB memory. From Event Viewer my error is as follows: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 4/24/2012 21:59:17 Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Premise-PC Description: Faulting application name: TESV.exe, version: 1.5.26.0, time stamp: 0x4f6c9333 Faulting module name: aticfx32.dll, version: 8.17.10.1124, time stamp: 0x4f625886 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000347ff Faulting process id: 0x17f4 Faulting application start time: 0x01cd22a02a4c060a Faulting application path: D:\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\TESV.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\aticfx32.dll Report Id: 68b69c2b-8e93-11e1-86a0-0026188ae38f If I am reading this correctly it is looking for a dll file "aticfx32.dll" in the system32 directory. My problem is that file does not exist, I only have a "aticfx64.dll" file. (Sorry I couldn't attach a screen grab of the folder, too big.) Could this be a reason for the mysterious error. Is the only solution rolling back to an earlier video driver version that includes all the correct dll files?

Good news. I installed the new 12.4 WHQL drivers released today and now everything works as it is supposed to. It listed a Skyrim fix in the verion log for the Win 7 64 bit. I have had problems unistalling older CAP files, BSOD etc. Their fix worked. I don't think I will install their CAPs unless they specifically solve an issue I am having. Not worth the trouble.
