Why mod?

Hi there. I'm a fairly new member to the nexus, so I'm uncertain how seriously this question'll be received, but hope someone might answer anyhow.

A little info so that the question makes sense: A long-time gamer and mod user (and addict to Skyrim), I managed to convince my professor to allow me to "study" Skyrim Nexus for a paper and project. It's on the topic of how this particular modding community fits into the definition of a commons-based peer production project, despite the hub-based/hierarchical structure and the issue of it being created for a profit-driven product ("peer production" technically isn't supposed to contain a hierarchy or financial motivations). I'm also exploring how the modding community, Skyrim Nexus in particular, has managed to shape game development and production into being more community-conscious, allowing for a sort of multi-layered recursion. Can't say it's the most exciting topic, but it's pointed me towards some very interesting literature...

My question: What motivates you or someone else to mod? Is it a need to have the game fit your desires? A passion for scripting? A love of seeing a finished project appreciated and admired? A means of practice in the hope of one day getting hired? In short, are most modders creation-driven or profit-driven ("profit" not necessarily pertaining to finances)?

I'm curious, especially since mods require a lot of time and dedication, and a well-made mod can garner a lot of attention for both creation and creator.

Side question: Also, has Skyrim's Creation Kit in any way opened up modding to people who wouldn't normally think of it?

Wow, that came off a lot more academic than I had wanted. Probably why I stay off forums. Well, hope I haven't scared everyone away.
