Crashing without mods - a new record!

After seeing more skyrim vr info floating around, I decided to scratch that old itch with some skyrim special edition. Since my old skyrim game is buried under a gorgon knot of mods, I decided to take things slow and start without mods, get to the golden claw in the first town, make that a clean save, then install mods bit by bit until I was sure everything would work.

That was the plan...which was thrown out the window when the sodding game crashes to desktop as I'm getting out of the caves from under Helgen!

I was expecting mod trouble, but evidently my skills have degraded to the point where an unmodded game will crash on my. And without fail, as well! Trying to get back into the game will crash it half the time, and even when I get into the main menu, loading the save before I leave the game causes it to crash as well.

So, thinking it might be how I'm using nexus mod manager wrong, I tell my program to stop using skse as a custom start, and start with the normal launcher. It comes up, I hit play, the screen flickers, then... nothing. No load at all, or a crash to desktop so fast that can barely register it.

After that, I try running skse directly, not using NMM. Works like a charm, get into town and make my clean save. Now comes the trouble, since I'm 95% sure this setup won't work when I start installing mods. Clearly NMM is having trouble connect to skyrim skse, but I've told it the location several times, and it still is having trouble. Any idea how to get NMM to find the SKSE file easily?

Sorry to hear that. It can understand that this is quite a bad and frustrating restart with Skyrim SE...

As for NMM: I simply wouldn't bother starting the game from it. Why should you? There isn't any real benefit in that - except for maybe saving two or three mouseclicks... I always created a link to the SKSE executable on my desktop, then ran Skyrim SE from there. On a side note: Currently, you should start Skyrim SE once to get Steam up and running, then exit, then launch Skyrim SE again to play.

Since you just started setting up a modded game, you might also try Vortex.

Yes, it is an Alpha. And yes, it has some minor bugs - but I didn't come across something game breaking so far. I'm using Vortex for some days now, and IMHO it's waaaayyyy better than NMM ever was. And it's a new program, that surely will get updated and improved within the next few months. I'd really recommend it. BTW, there are some excellent beginners' tutroials for Vortex by Gopher on Youtube, if you need some guidance on the first steps
