Greetings Folks,

 

MOD THOUGHTS:

SEPTIM retextured to reflect SEPTIM as Silver not Gold. "Gold" renamed to "Septim" or "Silver." If possible, Gold property reset to Silver. Option for Weight 1-lb = 100 SEPTIM (more realistic assuming silver coin).

SMELTING - while I am not a fan of smelting coin to metal mods, I did have a thought for those working on those mods: (a) Remember most Coin Silver or Coin Gold metals are not pure so 1-lb of SEPTIM (Coin Silver or Coin Gold) would and should NEVER yield 1-lb of metal (let alone a bar) even in the case of a PURE EXCHANGE (which could only be approached in modern lab like conditions) because Coin Silver and Coin Gold contains other elements (one-nine fine e.g., 1:9 ratio) ---- so you're going to get 0.9 of the metal you want; (b) Alchemy was always about loss and cost - you should NEVER obtain the pure capture of a modern closed system lab... so 1-lb of SEPTIM could never yield more than 0.9-lbs in pure exchange but should yield even less as lost-in-the-process so maybe 1-lb of SEPTIM = 0.9 lb of metal with an additional 10% lost-in-process so 0.8-lb which is frankly generous (personally, I would do 30% with under 50 Smithing Perk, 20% Smith Perk 50-90, 10% for Perk 90+). Moreover, I would never allow reverse - minting coins without serious problem (a) must obtain a counterfeit press, (b) must have Smithing Perk 90+, © must have other metals - 10% to 90% ratio, and (d) again lost material going in reverse (10% as you would have 90+ Perk to forge counterfeit coins. Plus for real immersion - every time you do create them there is a chance you get arrested with massive fines and jail time. Frankly... as immersive as you think it is... the truth is - destruction of coins, coin shaving (not even mentioned here... but people know what it is), and counterfeiting was a BIG DEAL even in ancient times. Of course, all that is with the notion of IMHO.

BASIC ROOT:

I have seen a lot of nice efforts to figure out how to manage realistic Septims. In an effort to figure somethings out, I ran numerous calculations based on information primarily about US Coin Silver (9:1 Silver:Copper Ratio) and Coin Gold (22kt or One-Nine Fine). In choosing sample coins, I wanted to select from coins that were circulated because coins circulated/treated with the TLC (lol) of a Skyrim World had to be somewhat solid (not bendable). Moreover, and obviously, I found coins varied in diameter and thickness and varied somewhat in composition - most US Silver Coins were One-Nine-Fine (9:1 Silver:Copper) whereas US Gold Eagle Coins were 22kt (0.917 Gold, 0.03 Silver, .053 Copper). When I ran the numbers, I found that Gold Coins were approximately 1.7-times as heavier than similar Silver Coins.

 

Okay, I have to say given the apparent size of the SEPTIMS in Skyrim (i.e., 1.25-inches to 1.5-inches) the numbers were really pretty brutal:

  • American Morgan Silver Dollar (9:1) 38.10mm (1.5-inches) weighed 33.930g (.0589-lbs) which means that 17 (16.98) Silver Coins could be carried per game pound (or 10 [9.99] Gold Coins). Sooooo.... SEPTIMS would work out to be 10 SEPTIMS OF GOLD (assuming 22kt gold coin composed as above was used) would equal 1-lb of weight (or 17 SEPTIMS OF SILVER).
  • American Quarter - Washington Silver [9:1 Silver:Copper] (1932-1964) which is 24.30mm (0.956-inches) and weighs 6.25g (0.0137-lbs) would mean 73 (72.99) coins could be carried per pound (or 43 Gold Coins) with similar assumptions.

When it comes to immersive coins, I would suggest a few things. I would stop assuming that you can backward smelt coins without a loss in weight and quality - so backwards smelting kind of not immersive though, if you do in your mods, you should account for loss of 20-40% in process and because coins are not really pure (ever).... plus reclaiming at a forge is not the same as closed lab system. Second, I would remember the coin in lore is a SEPTIM which may look Gold though is not necessarily PURE GOLD (or even close to it).

 

Personally, I think SEPTIM should be Silver Coins. If you wanted to assume Coin Silver (9:1) was used then your coins would need to be about the size of a Quarter (approximately 9/10ths of an inch in size) in which case you could carry about 75 coins per 1-lbs. If you assume, SKYRIM is more primitive civilization, even in the heart of the Empire, SEPTIMS could be composed of less Silver (more Copper & Nickle) with a Size of 1.25 (much more visible when loose on the ground and tables) and have 100 coins to 1-lbs.

 

I am not big on smelting coins - you really want to piss off the Empire forge coins (PS: do you have official coin molds lol) - however, I believe the best way is to assume 60-75% pure silver per coin and conversions Coin to Silver (or reverse) ALWAYS results in a loss of material.

Anyway, leaving smelting aside, I would love to see coins renamed SEPTIMS (not Gold) and SEPTIMS retexture/recolor (2K & 4K) and re-propertied to silver with an option for coins having real weight (1-lb to 100 SEPTIM made of Coin Silver - remembering coins are not assumed pure silver and so would not need to be resized just more copper-nickel filler-strengthener. Yup, 1,000 SEPTIMS [sILVER] would be 10-lbs and 10,000 SEPTIMS [sILVER] would be 100-lbs - want to buy an expensive item or house - bring a horse and store reserves safe place - lol.

 

In closing, I would note the calculations are based on information in attachment. Opinions are humbly my own... not a judgement against others or their play styles or fantasy-reality mix. I mean I am a UNP Player and you might be a CBBT Player... lol. Cheers....

I could not figure out how to add attachment when I went back to edit. Lol... hell I cannot make cut-and-paste work.... :smile:. Again, I think the math is fairly close and the websites are listed as to sources. I know my original calculation suggests 1.5 difference but that was before I found the information on US Eagle Gold Coins.
