Mesh Question - Pip-Boy Outfit Hiding

I've got an issue with an outfit mod I'm working on. I have taken the Greaser Jacket and modified it a bit in 3DS Max to alter the geometry a bit (remove the belt). The changes were relatively minor and the UVWs remained intact. I did need to clean up some texture parts of it in Mudbox, but that's not the scope of this question.

When testing the outfit in game, the Pip-Boy clips through the left of the arm of the jacket, where it do not in the vanilla mesh. That part of the outift was not altered in any way, but somehow the game isn't recognizing that there is a mesh there, and is no longer hiding the left sleeve from the elbow down.

I reason that this has to do with the segments, which are now no longer part of the mesh. The problem is - I've got no clue how to put them back. I'm assuming that this was stripped out in the OBJ (also tried FBX) pipeline out of OS to 3ds and back again.

If I import the nif mesh directly to 3ds, I can see the BS SubIndex Modifier and it has the segment/partition data there and visible - only I can't seem to export this and get it back to OS. I also can't import/export NIFs in Fallout 4 format, no matter what I try as well (but that's a different issue as well) - so I've taken to using OBJ and/or FBX depending on what kind of project I'm working on.

Any thoughts on this? I was hoping that I could simply import the existing Greaser Jacket SSF in OS, but that doesn't seem to work.

I have somewhat made a spot of progress on this. Using the vanilla Greaser Jacket as a template, I used OS to manually add back the correct segments and subsegments. I then used Nifskope to manually transfer the settings from one segment and subsegment to the new mesh. It seemed to work well on the parts of the jacket that were not modified.

However, when attempting to do this on the torso (where the edits were) and the left arm (numerically comes later than torso in segments) - the vanilla settings do not work (somewhat expected). The show up in OS and Nifskope, but are missing pieces as compared to how they should look.

Is there a tutorial or information about how to paint these segments using an outside tool? I know that OS can paint them as well, but since some of the components need to be hidden to do it properly, I don't think I can use OS for this.
