Help with texturing

Ive been working in a sword for a few days and know i got tiny problem which is texturing.

 

My sword has some small parts and i was wondering if i should extract my UV map (Ive done the UV map and it was easier than expected)

as a 512 x 512 image or bigger for better quality? (you know to customize it in photoshop / GIMP )

and if there's any problem making the image bigger

 

any response can be helpful and the sooner i get one is the sooner i can launch my mod ;)

For weapons, it depends alot on the shape of the weapon and how detailed you want parts of it. I wouldn't go above 1024x1024 though, large textures mean more memory being used, which can lead to a drop in performance. I believe one method was to use a 512x512 diffuse texture, then a 1024x1024 normal map which had some of its features enhanced. Regardless, it's ultimately about how things look and if the weapon causes any slow down.
