Joining the Dark Brotherhood shouldn't be an option

I always thought it was strange that you are allowed to join the Dark Brotherhood. Considering quite early on you'll discover that there is a contract out on you. I don't really care who wants me dead, but the fact that payment has been received, and failure is not an option should be enough to cancel any hopes I have of joining the DB.

Then once you kill Grelod they are just able to nab you while you sleep, So why then wasn't I just killed while I slept earlier as part of the original contract on me, instead of these random road attacks.

Surely if you waited long enough, you should be able to wipe out the entire Dark Brotherhood organization via the side of the road attacks.

Except this isn't a set in stone part of the story. The assassins are random encounter events. You can go through entire playthroughs and never encounter one.

Plus, the present DB aren't exactly playing by the traditional rules. Astrid makes things up as she goes for the large part, so you fulfilling the contract on Grelod ahead of them peaks her interest, since it's supposed to show that you have skills she could make use of.

I think she'd rather add a new skilled member to the group than simply kill them. Hence her test for you.

I realize the assassin encounters are random events. The fact I killed someone they had a contract on peaked her interest.......maybe. But this is skyrim, people are killing people all over the place, getting held up by thieves, giving orcs a good death, killing skooma dealers because you might snitch. Surely the Companions would have got her attention way before the player arrives. I still believe it's a bit of slack writing on Bethesda's part.

I still love the game, with 2000 hrs sunk it can't be bad.

And then there is the carriage ride to Helgen, every prisoner has their hands tied in front, Ulfric could've pulled his gag down, shouted Hadvar to death, Ralof could have strangled the carriage driver, the other 4 prisoners could have strangled the other carriage driver, which would've left General Tullius outnumbered 8 to 1 he rides off the 8 prisoners run into the woods and live happily ever after.

Maybe I'm just getting cynical as I get older. haha
