only the Phantom knows

I have a question I'm almost afraid to ask...

On several occasions, I have gone into a cave/fortress...or maybe returned...only to find that all the enemies are already dead.

This happened in Morvunskar...I had been in the fortress once before at a fairly low level (10?) and gotten my backside handed to me by the boss wizards.

Later I met Sam and after finishing the rest of "A Night to Remember" I returned to Morvunskar, about level 20. All the bad guys in that big room were already dead. Oh, there were a few stragglers who had somehow survived but no real competition.

Needless-to-say, I breathed a big sigh of relief and finished the quest, ending with the Sanguine Rose. (I am very fond of the SR, BTW, but I almost don't feel like I earned it).

There didn't seem to be any other problems and as I say, what could have been difficult (Lydia was having a "bad feeling about this") turned out to be relatively easy.

Other quests since then have been normally difficult, as you would expect.

Then, this weekend I met Barbus outside of Falkreath and went with him to the Shrine of Clavicus Vile...I am now at level 25. Barbus entered the shrine complex ahead of Lydia and I, but as we proceeded most of the opponents were already dead. I think I had to kill about five, is all.

So far, except for the easy opposition, no other problem shows up. I am about to enter Rimrock Burrow with Barbus for the second half of the quest...but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Thoughts? Any idea why this is happening?

I am not entirely sure, but some time's dead bodies are placed buy bethesda for ambience. I can explain your first situation though. You originally entered Morvunskar at level 10 so the dungeon became locked to your level (level 10) when you went back at level 20 it was easy because all the enemies were locked to 10. Bethesda mentioned this happens before the game was released. Because people complained about oblivion leveling with you. The level locking upon first entrance was a way to combat this somewhat. I appreciate the response.

That said, I don't think I made myself clear...

It's not just that the opponents seemed weak, it's that they weren't there. In Morvunskar, there were two boss wizards at the top of the stairs the first time I came in. I couldn't beat them or the half a dozen lackeys in the large room at the base of the stairs.

When I went in to Morvunskar later, the bosses were ash piles and the lackeys were bodies or ash piles. They simply ween't alive to fight me.

In The Shrine of Clavicus Vile, the same thing...some apprentice mage/vampire bodies, lots of ash piles...including twp or three at the foot of Vile's statue and another on the dais above it.

Calvicus Vile congratulates me for killing them...but I didn't.

Maybe Barbus did?

Anyone else seen this situation?

I've seen even more weird situation once.

I visited and cleared some forsworn base (don't remember it's name, sorry). Left only corpses behind.

Then I visited the same base again much later searching a book for old Urag. The forsworn were already respawned. Imagine my surprise when I saw that forsworn fighting... each other! Actually they seemed to be divided in two teams, and that teams fought each other. Both were hostile to me. And both were the residents of that base - not some rival invaders. They were fighting both outdoors and inside.

Maybe you've encountered the results of the same weird madness?

Morvunskar I don't know. I strongly suspect a mod conflict of some kind that had some of the factions inside the ruin fighting each other when they normally wouldn't.

As for Haemar's Cavern, the answer is simple. Barbas will rush on ahead of you and kill everything in sight without your help. I've had this happen on quite a few occasions, and I now use a console cheat to keep track of Barbas. I have a bat file called "xgetbarbas" that consists of the following two lines:

prid 52535

moveto player

Whenever he gets out of my sight I go to the console and type

bat xgetbarbas

That puts him right next to me. I always do this the moment I enter Haemar's Cavern. If I don't, then I'm never able to find him until I reach Haemar's Shame.

If you like to loot as you go and you don't want him getting ahead of you, use the "tcl" command. You can then move aound ("fly" actually") and collect stuff, but Barbas will just run in-place, since other actors can't move when a global no-clip is in effect. Make sure you click on something twice to reset the prid to null before you issue the command, though. I just leave him at the shine without talking to Clavicus Vile and then go back, loot, and return. Barbas will stay there and behave himself until you get back.

No mods installed at all. I suspect you're right about Barbus...too bad he isn't available for other quests. I don't mind him doing all the dirty work. It's nice to relax on a quest once in a while.

I read somewhere that the dog from the Markarth stables was invincible but then someone on one of these forums said they had paid the price and he got killed in the second encounter he was taken on.

Morvunskar, will, I guess remain unsolved.

By default I think Barbas is the only invulnerable dog, the one from the Markath stables is probably just a higher level than most because (and this is only in general) Markath is usually one of the cities you visit first at a higher level, and the auto leveling may make him a bit stronger ... Meeko is also said to be pretty tough by default (a little tougher than a vanilla stray dog) but I just created an NPC .bsa of Meeko and made him essential
