gtx 1080 with i5-6600k in fallout 4

i have a gtx 1060 with the i5-6600k (base clock), and i was thinking of get a new GPU (in case, the 1080) , does you guys know someone that play fallout 4 with this setup? and is it good or it will bottle neck?

If you have a 1080p screen the GTX1080 would be a giant waste of money.

 

The 1080 is for 1440p or even 4k

Scratch the term "Bottleneck" it depends on so much more, not only the hardware...

 

 

 

Anyway, the i5 and the 1080 will work together, had the same combo (6600k + 1080 strix) but for gaming @ 1440p/144hz & 4k and 0 probs so far, stable 144 and 60 fps in skyrim, fallout and so on.

 

But as above, dont hold the power back on a 1080p (and maybe 60hz) Screen, would also buy a matching Screen, but depends on your budget.

There is always a bottleneck and in games it should be the GPU.

 

You should indeed scratch the term, it only comes into play with i3's an C2Q or C2D and only the first generation i5s and i7s are somewhat of a bottleneck.

 

I've tested what would bottleneck my GTX970 and found that a i7-930 definitely was a bottleneck.

 

i7-990X, i5-2500k, i7-3770 and my Xeon 2680v2 where all OK.

As above...

I had 0 problems with my 6600k + 1080 Strix, i could run anyhing so far in 1440p with 144hz (144 fps) or on my other 4k screen with 60hz.

 

 

But if u only own an 1080p/60hz Screen.. stick to your gtx 1060, if its the 6gb version.

6Gb and the 192bit are good enough.

 

Upgrad only if the gtx can't handle your goal anymore, like reaching stable 60 fps or so.

 

And i5, the 6th gen is still good enough for gaming coz of intel's good singel core performance.

 

Rest depends on the rest of your setup and goal, screen, ssd, hdd, your cooling solution/setup and so on.

To make things easier, feel free to write done your full specs, cooler, screen and so on. to find a matching one.

Also your goals, do u wanna stick to 1080p, wanna go with 1440p or 4k?

 

*Keep also in mind, nvidia will release new gpu's this year.

It really depends what 1060 you have.

 

For modded games at 1080 resolution I could only recommend the 1060 6gb. If you have less vram on your 1060 go with a 1070 or 1070 ti if you plan on staying with 1080 resolution. With a 1070 you can stepping up to 1440 60hz resolution. The difference between 1080 & 1440 is night & day.

 

I used a GTX 1080 for my 1440 X 3440 60hz setup. For 1080 resolution it would only be worthwhile if you had a 144hz monitor.

 

I would not recommend waiting for the next gen Nvidia cards if you mainly want to play Fallout 4 & any other Bethesda game. I bought the GTX 1080 when it first came out. Fallout 4 & Skyrim SE were almost unplayable for 6 months. All my other games were fine. A driver update fixed the problem.

Another problem could be ENB compatibility. I had that problem when I went from a GTX 980 to a GTX 980 ti.

 

A i5-6600k is fine as long as you don't go crazy (like I do) modding your games. For going crazy modding games I can only recommend a i7 8700k.

if 1440p on a gtx 1080, don't hold it back with 60hz, go with 120 or more.

 

1440p with 144hz is a "sweet spot" for the 1080 and if the budget allows it, ips panel, optionally g-sync.

 

i7 well, uhm no.. you don't rly need an i7 for gaming.. I had a 6600k and a 1080 running @ 1440p/144hz and sometimes on my 4k/60hz screen with over 120 Mods and 0 probs and with the higher resolution that's up to the gpu anyway.

 

So the i5 will do the job fine enough..
