1950x Thread ripper Anyone?

OK I have had enough of my old pc now building a AMD based Thread ripper 1950x with a ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme x399 mother board.

Has anyone used this cpu/mother board set up for creation kit? I am not building just this just for gaming use.

Any feed back would be appreciated

If you are only going to game get an 2700x, Threadripper is for heavy number crunching.

It will work, but if it's for gaming/gaming too, go with Intel, intel still has the better single core performance in games.

 

8th gen i7 if u need the cores (depends on your goal).

Intel makes quality cpu's that are great for gaming. I want a system That will do more. Also Intel price's are to costly for my buget for this build.

It must be able able to game and run creation kit at once. edit videos . be able to watch net flix or hulu and what ever else I need to do. I am not a heavy gamer Fallout and a few racing games. 30 fps for Fallout 4 is fine with me. Then there's also the possibility that game maker's may make use of the fact that there's more core's to use as well.

 

My bottom line is i need a multi versatile system that will do what i ask of it. that's my first priority. I could build a gaming set up for less cost wise with just Intel parts.

G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 64GB 4x16GB

SSD 960 PRO NVMe M.2 512GB and a 1TB

Intel or Amd, rly depends on the editing apps.

If u wanna go with amd, nothing wrong and u can achieve more than 30 fps for a smooth gameplay.

 

 

But would change few things tbh..

 

Do u rly need the christmas light ram? If not, G.skill 4*16gb 3600mhz ~ $720

 

The Corsair Psu is with 1200w over the top, buy a decent 750 or max 800w unit, for example, Seasonic Focus Plus 750w ~ $100

 

Scratch the liquid cooler, thats more or less just a gimmick, buy a decent air cooler like the noctua d15 or dark rock pro 3. ~$80-90

 

If u wanna go with liquid buy an ekwb kit and go with custom loop instead of the fancy aio.

 

And if not rly needed, go with a 1080 ti ~ $749 for a Evga Black Edition, according to the current prices +/- the same as vega.

 

Your money, up to you.

 

 

And similar, well, I build a rig for 3d editing and gaming @4K :thumbsup:

I go along with Erik005.

 

A Ryzen 7 2700X would be the best CPU solution for what you want.

 

A Threadripper 1950x is not versatile. It has a low IPC(lots of not very powerful cores). The 2700X has really good IPC(8 strong cores).

 

For what you want to do is is really between the Ryzen 7 2700X and the i7 8700k.

 

For video editing they are about the same unless you use Premiere, then the i7 8700k wins(hardware acceleration).

For streaming the 2700X wins.

They are both great for gaming.

 

For video editing your SSD/HD solution is a bit off. A 512gb SSD is too small as well as your HD. I recommend going with a 1tb SATA($250) & a 6tb WD Black($240) to start. Videos take up a lot of space.

 

It is best to start with 32GB ram unless you are doing 8k video.

 

For a video card, check if your editing/rendering software uses cuda. If it does, get a Nvidia card.

Since gaming has no priority, yes ryzen is the better choice.

I would go with something like that:


AMD 2700x *If the budget is a bit "tight" 1700x.

Cooler up to you, but as above, skip the aio, a noctua d15, bequiet dark rock pro 3, cryorig h5 uni or r1 will do the job good enough, if liquid - look at ekwb.

Asus mobo like the Strix X370-F, if u need more connections like usb, asus crosshair vi hero.

2x16 GB Corsair LPX 3200MHZ (But that's up to you).

Samsung 960 Pro 1tb m.2 for os and apps.

And a good Drive for Storage, like the WD Black or Gold, min. 4tb.

GTX 1080 ti, evga, asus, msi, galax/kfa², brand don't rly matters, just dont buy the basic line like asus dual or so. Aim for a asus strix, msi gaming or so (Better cooling solution and so on)
*Keep an eye on the market, atm u can get few ti's for ~ 750 bucks like the evga sc black.

PSU, well Seasonic focus gold or prime 750w (one of the top notch psu brands), with that setup you could even go down to 660w.

Case, that's a personal thing, up to you, just dont buy a cheap one.

That's ~ $2.5K without a case.

What about a Screen btw. do u have one?

I use my 55" 1080p tv for a moniter will be up grading to a 4k version later this year if there was a 55" monitor i would be looking at that instead.

decided to go with the treadripper I have the Asus rog x399 motherboard now. I will be using a M.2 960pro 512 ssd for the os and a M.2 512 to keep my few games and creation kit on and M.2 1tb for other applications. As i have a few 1 and 2tb hard drives for storage there is not any need to buy any. Graphics card will be a Asus rog strix GTX 1080Ti . Decided to go with ddr4 3600 memory not sure if im going with 16 or 32gb yet. have yet to look at a case. still looking at a 1100-1200watt psu if i ever decide to add anything i won't have to worry about having enough power .

I'm going to assume you went with an ASUS Zenith Extreme as that's the only ASUS X399 board with 3 available M.2 slots (Unless you got a PCIe riser card for one of the M.2 drives) Since it's an E-ATX form factor, a case that will fit it will be a bit tough (Especially if you're considering an ATX Mid tower) But I know the Fractal Design Define R6 could work for your needs. This is assuming you're still looking for a case.

Since RAM prices are (still) out of sight, it's probably best to go with 16GB (2x8GB) for now and upgrade to an appropriate quad channel setup later. Just make sure to check your motherboards QVL to see what RAM work best since it still has Gen 1 "Zen" cores and has some more RAM compatibility issues than the Gen 2 "Zen+" (Expected to be launched in August)

Since you have an HEDT platform, I like to think 850W at most should be ideal unless you're considering adding a 2nd GPU (Which I wouldn't at this point since SLI support is dwindling and scaling for it is generally sub-par) Any higher wattage PSU in my opinion is just wasted money.
