dennis71
Hi all! Really noob question, but how do you know if you need the 4gb patch? I have the Games for Windows Ultimate Edition. Here is what I'm running it on...... Motherboard: ASRock Z10 Professional Gaming i7 CPU: Intel Core i7 6700k overclocked to 4.00GHz RAM: 16gb Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6gb Storage: 1.7tb of free hard disc space. I know it's not my rig, but when I tried running the 4gb patcher, my game was crashing. Without it, no problem. So how do you know?
dubiousintent
You need the game to be patched to enable the LAA flag to use more than the default of 2GB allowed to 32-bit games. If you are having a crash after applying the 4GB patcher to the game, more than likely you have obtained it from GOG instead of Steam. The GOG edition already has the 4GB patch applied, and the Patcher is neither needed nor designed to work with that version. (Similarly it will not work with a "pirated" version of the game, because in both instances the point where the patch is applied is not the same as designed.) As for how to tell, please see the "LAA in General" section of the "2-4GB game memory limits and solutions" article linked in my signature. -Dubious-
dennis71
Hi, and I did not get it from Steam or GOG. I got the hard disc version of the game from Amazon in July of 2016. Never messed with mods until Fallout 4 came out and wanted to see why others thought New Vegas was a better game. I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos and following them to the letter and still can't get this game to run right!
dubiousintent
Even a "hard disc" version in 2016 was a Steam version. It still has to download the game from the Steam servers. (The GOG Ultimate Edition was released in Jun 2017. It works similarly but from GOG servers.) Did you install Steam to it's default location? If so, please see the wiki "Installing Games on Windows Vista+" article for why the original default Steam behavior of installing games to the "C:\Program Files" folder tree was bad (they learned better, and don't do that any more); and why "disabling UAC and running as Administrator" is NOT sufficient, with instructions how to move it. This is the single most important thing you can do to fix and protect yourself against problems in the future. As much of a PITA as that is, it's never going to be any easier than now. Please see the 'Restoring to "Vanilla"' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article as well. Once you have moved the game to another folder, try the 4GB Patcher again. -Dubious-
dennis71
So move it out of the program86 folder?
dubiousintent
Yes. That (and any sub-folders under it) is treated as a "system folder" and Windows prevents alterations by anything as potential malware. Moving it out to a "Games" folder avoids that problem. -Dubious-
dennis71
Thanks, I just deleted everything, created a new folder and started all over again.
dennis71
Ok, I'm getting sick of this. I've done everything recommended that I do and this stupid 4gb patch , once installed, won't let me save, anything!! I can't save even the game settings!!!! I get this "no storage device selected, will not save settings" warning, but only when having the 4gb patch installed! Look, if someone on here live near the Whiting, Indiana area, I'll pay you to set this up!!!!!
dubiousintent
Are you using this 4GB Patcher? Any other is "deprecated". If that doesn't work, then I recommend you contact whomever you obtained that "hard disc" from and try to obtain some sort of refund. Because it's behaving like a "cracked" copy. If you do replace it, suggest you get the GOG version as it doesn't need the 4GB patch at all. Otherwise it works identical to the Steam version by all reports. -Dubious-
