Maximum modded data?

I know about the max number of plugins. I'm wondering if there's a known limitation to the amount of modded data Oblivion can upload. I really pushed my most recent mod install with a bunch of quest mods plus a lot of TWMP stuff, and it got to the point where I'd get a freeze on the loading screen. I was well under the 255 active* plugin limit, but the amount of data behind those plugins was huge. Is this a limitation of Oblivion itself, or just a limitation of my system? Will the engine choke on that much stuff no matter what, or could such an extreme build theoretically work with a good enough computer?

 

*I had a number of plugins merged in the bashed patch, but I think it was still under 255, plus the whole point of merging is so those plugins don't count against that limit, right?
