How to make an armor replace certain guard armors?

Recommended Posts

I'm okay with the creation kit, and I can figure out how to do things if necessary, and the Skyrim community is extremely helpful and there are plenty of tutorials out there for anything. But I can't seem to find any post that explains how to do this.

I have certain armors from mods that I want to make replace certain guard armor of the holds, this mod will be for my personal use. I can't seem to find anything telling how to do this.

Is there anyone who can help me with this and tell me what I need to do?

Preferably with detail, and not just a brief two word explanation

Thanks for any help provided!

Are these all separate mods you have installed, or are you adding each of the armors to a single mod, for your guards?

If it's the former, you may run into trouble with mods overriding each other, if there's another one that touches the same guards. You may have to play around with load orders, to make sure the mods you want to affect your guards load later than some other mod that affects guards. That being said, if I was going to use armors from one or more mods that I already have installed, I'd probably open each mod in creation kit, separately, change the outfit for the guard I want to use that mod's armor, then save, close, and open the next mod. For personal use, I feel like that would be easier than having to recreate a mod with various armors in it, just to vary the guards.

What you would want to do is look under items > outfit in the object window. You should see a long list of outfits. Use the search box to narrow down to guards, and find the one you want to change. Double click to open it. Then, back in the object window, find the armor you want to use. You may have to do some digging if the mod author hasn't mad the editor names stand out, but once you find what you want, drag it right into the outfit form you opened earlier. Then you can delete what you don't want to be a part of their outfit, from the form. Close it and save. If you accidentally leave a vanilla item in, your guard will equip whichever the game considers better. Once you change an outfit, you would need to let the game reset to see the change, except on guards you haven't encountered before. Alternatively, you could walk up to them, open console and target them with the mouse, then type "resetinventory" without quotes, which should put them into their new outfit.

If you change your mind later, you can re-extract the mod and install it again, getting rid of your guard modified version.

Thank you so much for the help! It worked!

I just have one more question for you, Is it possible to change the weapons a specific hold guards have? for example, I made Markarth have dwarven style armor, but normally the guards have steel weapons and I want them to have Dwarven weapons.

I also noticed they use a leveled list to give guards weapons, but I believe that applies to all guards in the game.

So to give them the weapons I want do I just have to make a new leveled list, and replace the generic guard one they use? Or does each hold have their own weapon leveled lists?

That's the safest bet, making a unique list and giving it to the guards you want. You might name with YourInitials_MarkarthGuardOutfit or something, so you can find it easier, and keep it separate, if you decide to do other holds as well. The list will work the same way as the outfit, just drag and drop what you want them to have, including other lists. (Ie: you might drag in dwarven sword, dwarven bow, and a common citizen's pocket loot, etc.)

I think* (grain of salt) the vanilla game uses imperial and sons soldier lists, to determine guard weapons. You're right, best not to mess with that if you don't have to. This also gives you the opportunity to leave torches out, if you don't want them disturbing your lighting.
