Skyrim causing computer to lock up

Started when i got new video card (EVGA 570 HD), ever since it was installed, Skyrim will random lock up my computer, forcing me to restart it. Sometimes I'll get BSOD messages after re logging. Only Skyrim does this, none of my other games (running on steam or not,) will. I've tried reinstalling Skryim multiple times, started new characters, reinstalled mods, and reinstalled the video drivers multiple times. Anyone know whats going on?

I've got an EVGA 560 and I've never had any problems with it.

I did have a few BSOD problems which sound exactly like yours with an older 470. It was due to a defective card though, dunno what is was about Skyrim which was tripping it. Only thing I can really suggest is to grab one of the benchmarking/stress test applications like 3DMark and run it through to make sure everything checks out.

EDIT: As a long shot: Your PSU capable of handling a 570? Any graphics intensive game will destroy a computer with one of those if your PSU isn't up to the task.

Alright, I'll run one, but I play Rift, and its far more intensive then Skyrim is i think, and it handles it just fine.

STOP error 0x117 means that the display driver failed to respond in a timely fashion. STOP code 0x00000117 may also display "VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED" on the same STOP message.
from here another which looks relevant here

Kinda suggests there might be traces of older drivers present, or the card isn't seated properly.

How would i go about fixing this? I went though Device Manager to uninstall them usually.

The second reference has a rather comprehensive list of steps to take (2nd and 4th answers). I'm certainly no expert in the area, so if that fails I'm stumped. It certainly isn't a problem with the drivers themselves, the card manufacturer or Skyrim since it's definitely working properly over here, with everything pretty much straight out of the box.

This sounds like a hardware problem - you cannot fix hardware problems with drivers.

1. Power down, remove the card, look at the fans and clean out any accumulation of dust

2. Replace card, power up make sure the fans are working.

3. Run a test program such as the FREE Furmark - available here: http://majorgeeks.com/FurMark_d4183.html

Be absolutely sure to actually read the documentation and instructions before running any diagnostic program or you will be wasting your time.

If your card passes the furmark testing, I would suspect a RAM chip problem use this diagnostic. http://majorgeeks.com/FurMark_d4183.html
