[LE] melee with staff

I have a follower and I want to make him look like he is fighting using his staff for melee and magic. Let me know if there is a better way to do this:

-take two identical looking staffs and make one a greatsword or warhammer.

-set quests telling him what conditions to use which staff

 

Is there anything I am missing or a better way to do this?

I would as you are thinking use a staff mesh that you have as a mace or such and then build a script that detects type of attack your performing whether a normal attack, power attack, sneak attack etc. and essentially assign when it casts a spell. If you need help with that take a look to the script on the bloodskaal sword that casts a spell whenever you power attack.
