Casting spells reduces total magicka

Simple idea I had to give the player an incentive to use more powerful, higher magicka cost spells rather than spamming low cost spells.

Basically during my playthrough I realized I had almost no reason to use Thunderbolt (expert level, 60 magicka/175 dmg) as opposed to Chain Lightning (adept, AOE, 27 magicka/118 dmg).

If each time the I cast a spell it reduced the total magicka by a certain amount (maybe -0.5 per spell cast, no matter the skill level) it would give me a pretty good reason to use Thunderbolt once for the same magicka cost (although lower damage) than using Chain Lightning twice. It would also add another layer of depth to the fairly mundane spell cost/damage ratio of the vanilla game, making the player actually think before spamming spells everywhere.

Lore wise I guess you could attribute it to mental fatigue. Simply resting for a few hours could remove the penalty.

Anyway I hope someone likes the idea, I wish I could do it but I have no idea how to accomplish this myself.

The big issue I see with this idea although it could feasibly be done via script, is that you would have to apply your script to every spell in the game and also have a unique global for each spell to keep track of your spell cost changes for each spell. That when combined with say Apocalypse, Phendrix Magic Evolved, Forgotten Magic Redone, Midas Magic, or any other mod that adds cool and unique spells would likely be incompatible with your mod idea unless you managed to get each author's permission and attach to those as well.

Which you could be looking at around 500 or so spells when all said and done.

You could do this yourself if you really wanted to for your own game, but unless you found a way to build for compatibility with other magic mods, and or got permission to release if you changed any of their work you're looking at essentially a task akin to trying to ice skate uphill.

Not to say your idea is bad or anything, I actually think it's interesting, albeit impractical.

Hi there, I've been at it for a while now and it's actually quite simple I think, the only thing is that it also applies to shouts and powers. Im working on the 'magicka reset' at the moment, do you simply want to rest at a bed to reset your magicka or do you want something special? I'm still not 100% sure if it works though!
