Uninstalling

Hi

I am uninstalling Skyrim SE for the first time and I am a bit shocked with what Steam leaves behind.

I figured that Steam would not delete the files in the Skyrim Special Edition folder that I put there (ENB, Reshade & mod files).

What it didn't do was remove ini & the AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition files.

Now can see why people new to modding can get into real trouble uninstalling then reinstalling this game.

I do understand that these files are created after the install but it is not a clean uninstall with these files still present.

I know that to some my post sounds naive but the last time I uninstalled a Bethesda game was Oblivion in 2008 (pre Steam).

The reason why I uninstalled the game is that I was defeated by a CTD wall. The reason I didn't make a post about this CTD is that it is really strange.

I have the game on 2 computers. Both have the same mods with the same load list. The major difference is that one is Windows 10(WS) & the other is Windows 7(4k).

The CTDs is on the Windows 10 computer. The CTD does not exist on the Windows 7 computer testing with the same save.

My solution was to copy the all the Skyrim Special Edition folder files along with the ini & AppData files from the Win 7 computer to the Win 10 computer. That did not work. Neither did switching off all the plugins & testing with a new game.

As I started to typing this I did the uninstall - reinstall and loaded up my test save that I made with the plugins off. I got a really strange message saying that the save could not be upgraded and that I should start a new game. Before I made the save I had Steam check the integrity of the files so I know my game was up to date. The saves still loaded but I made a new character to be safe. Now the CTD is gone.

The only thing I have learned from this is that sometimes you do have to uninstall.

If there are any mega brains out there that can see something I have missed please add a comment.

The CTD was just before Whistling Mine traveling from Winterhold.

This is why there are a number of guides out there telling how to make Skyrim, SSE vanilla again.

I like this post because it seems to me that many people who are new to Skyrim and SSE seem to be under the impression that uninstalling the game thru Sream gives them a clean game when that is not the case. Anyone who has ever uninstalled either game with Revo uninstaller can tell you that there are literally hundreds of files left behind, as Jones stated.

Fixed my game.

On the off chance that a corrupt loose file was not overwritten by the files from my Windows 7 computer I decided to copy my modded game over the vanilla one.

It worked.

My game is 64.5gbs with 216,080 files. One of those files was corrupt and caused a local CTD.

Without the complete uninstall I would have never fixed my game.
