Mod to change NPC equipment without console commands?

I hope this isn't too redundant: are any good ways to give a non-companion something and have him/her wear it?

The only way is to modify the NPC's individually (yes ALL of them 1 at a time) either with the CK or the NPC Editor, or replace 1 particular in game clothing item (like farmclothes01 for instance) with another, though of course, that means ALL NPC's wearing that outfit will be changed ... Otherwise it's "equipitem" in the console with the NPC selected, although the change will revert once you zone out and back or reload from a savegame

You could make your non companion into a companion in the CK. Then you could change their clothes at will (as long as they wear a worthless custom outfit with an armor rating lower than what you give them to wear. If you are giving your wife pretty dresses to wear, you may have to edit them too and make them into light armor with an armor rating of 1 which would be better than her worthless outfit with an armor rating of 0.)

If you did not want your spouse to use the vanilla Skyrim follower system with its limit of 1 NPC companion at a time, you could use a dialog and scripting system like the one used in this mod: Followers Unlimited.

You could make a mod that has a custom default outfit for your wife as well. I made a simple tutorial for doing that. but thats long term and rather permanent just like vanilla except modded.

Personally i decide what my spouse will be wearing and make a custom outfit like in my tutorial. I always make them 3 or 4 different outfits with level lists and If I want her to change i use the resurrect console command on her to refresh her outfit.
