WIP Armour - Skinning Help Needed

Recommended Posts

This is my first attempt at making a custom armour using some existing meshes and some of my own.

I've managed to get the armour in game but the skinning is proving to be a real nightmare. After a couple of days of work I have some parts of the armour skinned to a reasonably acceptable level, but other parts are giving me a lot of trouble and no matter how I try to weight them they still clip quite badly (especially when crouching). The boots and bracers also don't seem to line up with the body in game, but line up perfectly in blender.

At this stage it feels like I've hit a brick wall in progress terms. It would be hugely appreciated if anyone could have a crack at fixing up the skinning for me.

Thanks.

try merging the parts that are not on top of a joint (such as the shoulder pads) into a single object so it bends with the skeleton...i would also make the barely visible chain links 2d so it cuts down the number of polys...and giving more detail to the flat surfaces (but that's just me)

otherwise, good job ;)

Sorry for the late reply, my nets down atm.

I've already joined the shoulder pads into a single object and they aren't giving me much trouble anyway and the poly count isn't too high (for me at least).

My main concern is the belt straps, I've tried joining them with the skull and rear plates to make a single object but that actually just made the situation worse. If I weight the straps to the hips it stays aligned with skull and rear plate but clips heavily through the thighs and if I weight them to the thighs they move out of alignment with the skull and rear plate. I've tried gradually blending the weights from the hips to thigh but I end up with jagged stretched out meshes.

Also I have no clue why the boots and bracers don't align up with the body ingame, so its become a long case of trial and error, moving the meshes in blender slightly, exporting, configuring with nifskope and testing in game to find little change. If anyone has a more accurate and less time consuming method, please let me know.

it was the other way around...but anyway, since it's not giving you trouble you might want to center on those straps right?...apparently the weighting is not correct and doing it by hand, one vertex at a time is...well, you get the idea.

take a look at this, it might shed some light and it doesn't get any more simple than that: http://obliviontextures.wetpaint.com/page/Easy+Rigging+in+Blender
