Companions need to move

So perhaps I'm missing it or just plain not using the right words to search but is there (or can there be) a mod where your companions don't go full-retard when you're trying to shoot something in the distance? I'm so tired of having to pick up Oh Baby! (thanks, Lily) or whatever long range item that Veronica pulled out (for no reason at all) and repair it just because they wanted to take a bullet for that Legion jerk on top of that hill. Perhaps it was F04 on PS4 but I swear there was a mod that did just that.

I'm not clear on just what you want this mod to do? Assuming it is the ability to make the companion be "true passive", then you want "JIP Companions Command and Control" (JIP CC&C).

Well, not really (but that mod does look like it would replace some individual mods I've downloaded, so thanks for that). It's just that whenever I'm zooming in on something and about to take my shot, it seems that companions have to play "Get Down Mr. President!" and get in the way. I don't mind if they're up close or far back, just not right in front of me when I'm not moving/zooming in. I know that Lily's personality makes her want to protect her "grandchild" but I don't need that.

That "getting in the way of my shot" behavior is a consequence of the NPC's combat style (melee vs ranged), aggressiveness, and the navmeshing in the area which defines how they move from point A to point B. If you are a "long gunner", then you really don't want your companions to be using a "melee" style of attack, as it means they will ALWAYS rush to close the distance and get in the way of your shot. They aren't "protecting you". They are trying to steal your kill.

Even when they are using "ranged" combat style they tend to rush in. Setting JIP CC&C to "true passive" mode is the only way I have found to stop them from doing so, at least until you take your first shot. After that they revert to rushing and aggressive attacks. It's considered a "feature". You would have to develop your own AI combat package to alter that behavior. Not clear to me how that could be accomplished.

I'm just brainstorming, but I think you might be possible to put something together. We have functions that can check if your aiming/zooming, and we have some angle related functions as well (trigonometry functions). I think that could be paired with a package (travel) so that they would clear a cone shaped zone (say 15 degrees to either side that the courier is facing) in front of your player while zooming. Is that kind of what your looking for?

Exactly! What a better way of wording it. I swear I have an IQ of -4 after I get off work.

No worries, it can be difficult to describe spatial arrangements via text. Sorry for the late response, I haven't had a chance to do any modding, but I'll try and look into this when I do get some time.
