Creating a new weapon type?

Hey guys im looking at having both 2 handed and 1 handed staffs in my mod, with different animations(attack, walk, run, idle, etc etc) for each kind, but was wondering how i would go about doing this?

I already know how to animate and bring those animations into Skyrim, so thats not the part i need help with. What i need help with is figuring out how to do this. In the animations folder there is a bunch of staff animations, but they only seem to apply to right-handed 1-handed staffs. I need to make it so that some staffs are held with both hands complete with animations, while other staffs are held in just one hand(leaving the option to dual wield with a staff available) complete with different animations.

Would i look at creating a new weapon type using the default staff animations to accomplish this? (eg. duplicate the current staff weapon type and alter the duplicate copy to hold the staff in both hands) Or is there another way? Because as it is, if i just replace the current staff animations to use a 2-handed grip this change will apply to ALL staffs ingame, but i dont want ALL staffs to be 2-handed, just a certain few.

As you can see im a bit confused by it all and would love some help getting my head around this.

Thanks,

big

The staves in Skyrim are currently not weapons, but rather more like wands in D&D. They have a single spell linked to each staff, and a repository of charges in order to cast that spell, regardless of whether the staff wielder knows it. As such, the staff animations are simply projecting the staff forward so the spell effect can fire off. There are no swinging, blocking, or power attack animations with staves. The best thing you could do would be to use one-handed and two-handed staff models as mace-type and warhammer-type weapons. Give them the mace or warhammer keyword so they interact with the perks for those weapons..

There are more staff animations then just the firing of the projectile. There is running animations with the staff, walking animations with the staff, sneaking animations with the staff, and heaps of others. These are the ones im trying to change to 2 handed, while leaving some of the staffs as they are(1 handed).

So the question still remains; would i do this by creating a new weapon type? Or is there a better way?

I would generally say that something like that is impossible. If you figure out how to do it, though, good on you.

I think i may have figured out a way that might work.

If i altered the right handed animations to use the 2 handed grip, then any staffs i want to be two handed i could just flag as 'right-hand only' in the CK. Then leave the left handed staff animations as is, and any staffs that i want to remain one handed i could just flag as 'left-hand only' in the CK. What do you guys think? Will this work?
