New to Modding - Looking for some help. Tips always appreciated!

Hello :D

As said in title pretty new to making mods, and I've been doing a bit of research via videos / creation kit wiki tutorials. I have no formal knowledge of coding, but things seem simple enough looking at what's already coded into the game. There's a lot of resources out there so first and foremost THANK YOU to those who have put that out there for newbies. It's pretty user friendly!

So here's my problem:

I'm creating an NPC (ideally to make my own companion from) and I'm stuck on some trivial s***. I'm hoping to use some custom hair / armor models from other mods. Now when I'm in the creation kit I can get them loaded on to the npc, looks great A+. I'm making sure to check the other mods that would be master files to it, but when I save and just do a plain little test in game to see the NPC... there she is, in her underwear and definitely in some basic b vanilla hair.

Using FOEdit I've gone back to ensure that the master files were added, same s***. Nothing changing. More shorty in underpants and hair. I was able to use face ripper to work so that's been great. Easier than editing a face in the creation kit, that's for sure.

So here I am pissed about aesthetics, because I can't get down to the rest of the quest/text/voice stuff until I can just make the person look as required. I guess the world of modding in Bethesda is definitely NOT without bugs. Is it just because it's custom digs or am I missing something pretty obvious?

Thanks in advance!
