Valdacil's & RadRose - What the hell am I doing wrong?

I have been trying to play FO4 for almost two weeks now fighting OS "features", game updates, Vortex quarks, merging issues and load order problems. I am about at my wit's end.

I have been forced to start breaking down and testing mods in groups to get them working properly. The first two mods are RadRose and Valdacil's Item Sorting.

Here is my (current)load order (plugins.txt after LOOT sort)

My first goal before I start adding my other mods to this list is to get V&R working and creating a merge patch for them. ISSUE: I can't get these mods to work as expected. And yes, DEF_UI is installed and configured.

So this is what I expect:
18098-1521297321-2032250198.jpeg

And this is what I get:

I am not looking at color, just to be clear. I am looking at ICONS or lack thereof. The tags should have been replaced by icons. What am I doing wrong? What did I miss?

Is there anyone willing to help me out? I would like to play sometime before Fallout 76 comes out.

EDIT: I noticed that I forgot to enable iconlibs2. I have enabled that but for the life of me can't remember if it loads before, after or between DEF_UI, RadRose and/or Valdacil's. Any guidance?

I don't use Vortex so I can't help ya there... But I do use Def_UI, iconlibs2, Valdacil's, and Radrose. I use Mod Organizer 2, and the way I load mine to get exactly what you are wanting is Load DEF_UI first (making sure to choose to use Valdacil's sorting when it asks), then I load iconlibs2, then load Valdacil's, and lastly Radrose's mod. Radrose's enhancements should have the radio stations and other stuff. But it also loads the correct lyrConf.xml, DEF_INV_TAGS.xml, DEF_INV_TAGS - Visible.xml, and DEF_INV_TABS.xml files.

Thank you for the reply. A definitive load order for these mods is just what I was looking for.

So, going off your post, I decided to completely uninstall and reinstall the mods in order: DEF_UI --> iconlibs2 --> Valdacil's --> Radrose. Each time making sure each one loads after the previously installed. There is some difference but... Well, take a look:

No icons OR tags in the radio section now, yet in weapons there is icon+tag but only for one weapon. Looking through the pipboy menus, icons are hit or miss but I don't see any more tags.

I am baffled by this. Could it be some residual file that isn't being updated? Maybe Vortex just can't handle these mods? Be a pity, it has worked great up till now.

Anyone willing to help me out? I am at my wit's end here. Just tell me what data you need from me. Are there files I need to delete manually when uninstalling these mods in order to reset to zero? What's my next step?

UPDATE: FINALLY! For anyone else dealing with this:

If you use HUDMenuSet.exe or Settings.exe to generate your DEF_*.xml files, there is a possibility that Vortex will not see them as part of the mods and thus not remove them when you uninstall said mods. They will remain in your [fallout4]\data\interface\DEF_CONF folder and WILL NOT be overwritten by fresh installs of these mods. You have to delete them out and THEN install the mods from scratch. Failing to do so will cause issues like the ones described in this thread.

Thank you, Cube, for the help. If not for you I would not have been paying as close attention to the files as I did.

Now to fix the dark/dim pipboy problem (you might notice it in my screenshots). It has got to be drivers...

damnit...

updated DEF_UI to latest and it broke again. tried reinstalling all four in order, making sure to clear the folder. It didn't work. It HAS TO be the load order. I ran it through LOOT and it SEEMS ok but there has got to be more going on

Man that's really weird... Must be something weird with Vortex. Here's an idear though:

On your desktop, make a Folder called Data, inside there make a folder called Interface, then inside that make a folder called DEF_CONF. In the DEF_CONF folder you are going to place copies of the different .XML files from DEF_UI and Radrose like this: DEF_HUD.xml and DEF_INV.xml (created after running def_ui's config settings files), then DEF_INV_TAGS.xml, DEF_INV_TAGS - Visible.xml, and DEF_INV_TABS.xml from Radrose.

Next go back a level to the Interface folder, in here you want to place copies of: iconslib2.swf (from iconslib2) and lyrConf.xml (from Radrose)

Now go back to your desktop create a ZIP file/archive from the Data folder. After it is done and you have the data folder zipped up, you should be able to use Vortex (I'm guessing here) to add the Zip file as a Mod. Now using that same load order we had before, put this newest "mod" after Radrose so it loads as the Last icon mod in your load order. You could even try putting it at the bottom to load as the very last mod. So basically we're just loading the icon config settings themselves absolutely last so nothing can override them.

If that doesn't work... Try Mod Organizer 2 :P

Boy, did you hit the nail on the head with a powersledge. I know it's an alpha build and I am aware it will have bugs, but randomly not sorting the loadorder.txt? That's one for the books.

So here is what was happening:

When I enabled (or disabled) a large mod that had many esp's (like the two mods here) it would throw them in the load order with no rhyme or reason. You press "sort now" in the plugin window and it would use LOOT to sort based on your rules. In the window, everything is fine.

Everything is NOT fine, however, in both plugins.txt and loadorder.txt. Both of these files had the load order BEFORE you pressed "sort now". In plugins.txt, some mods are not even enabled by a * next to their name.

What was happening to me was that I would fix the load order to be correct, test in game and get negative results because the load order in Vortex was not the same as the load order in the two text files. So I would pull all my work and try again, only to have the same thing happen.

Now that I am aware and know I have to close and restart Vortex after a major change in load order and to keep those files current in notepad++, I have been able to fix this problem AND create Merge Plugins for these two massive mods (saved nearly 40 slots!)

So thanks again for your help, Cube. I can now play with my sanity intact. At least I will after I fill out a bug report...

Oy vey... What a pain in the A-hole having to keep tabs on the plugins files just to make sure they aren't loading according to CHAOS rules hah.

Glad you figured it out though! And Praise Merge Plugins, I merged those exact same mods for the exact same reasons hehe :)
