Zazoomah
When I heard about followers in skyrim, i expected something better. What do i mean by "better"? we'll, they walk into traps, instead of jumping off a cliff with me, they go down the slow and tedious way and making me wait for them to come down, and they blow my cover when i'm using stealth. Oh, and they also talk too much. "I am swoooorn to carry your burdens" Edited May 22, 2012 by Zazoomah

Anyway, what was GTA SA's companion system like? I haven't played it because i'm not into crime simulation games. Unless it lets me become an assassin or something similair because i like stealth... Balakirev
Why would anyone suppose that Bethsoft would spend a lot of time improving the rules set for its companion AI in Skyrim? Resources were put where they were felt the return would be greatest. That said, I don't suggest avoiding companions altogether. Just keep in mind a few basic rules: 1) Never employ a mage companion. 2) If you have a spellcasting companion, look for mods that allow you to "unlearn" and teach them spells. Remove anything from Destruction. Focus on summons and healing. If you need to, do this in the construction set. 3) Never employ a mage companion. 4) There are a huge range of companions of all levels and training on Nexus. Check those out. 5) Never employ a mage companion. And finally: 6) Never employ a mage companion. Keep those six rules in mind, and you should be able to make it through your next battle with companions without too much swearing.

Now the list is complete ...  Having said that, I did find though, that creating a new mage follower mod and filling his/her spell list with destruction spells OTHER than the AOE ones (gah! I'm so sick of my followers attacking each other because one of the idiots used fireball!) generally seems to stop them from using/learning those, maybe if they already have a high level NON AOE spell they don't auto learn new ones? Ones like icy spear and incinerate seem to be OK ... Though you DO have to watch them closely, 'cause the crafty buggers will loot corpses and pick up a staff of fireballs if your not careful (Lydia seems able to find them everywhere, or maybe THAT'S where she disappears to all the time? She runs off to butcher a mage to steal their staff's! )
