How do I change NPC to a custom race?

I downloaded a race called "The Ashen - Oriental Beauty Race" and another mod called "Beautiful Characters and Companions". I wanted to change one of the companions to the Ashen race. But I do not know how to change NPC to a custom race in Skyrim CK. What I did was, I choose the character that I wanted to change and then I changed her race from Breton to Ashen. But that did not work. When I went in-game to see her, she was a animal instead of the Ashen race. Please how to do I change a NPC (companion) to a custom race?

I'm not sure about this so i'll guess something:

 

- in order to modify a mod using another mod, the other mod needs to be an ESM

 

- so when loading, you have to tick the ashen race ESM, and then set the companions mod (esp) as the ACTIVE FILE

 

- so basically you are making the companion mod a child and the ashen race mod a parent

 

- do your changes and save the plugin (if the CK tells you to create another plugin then you did something wrong, not setting the companion one as the active file)

 

This because a esp can't use features from another esp. It needs to be an esm
