Occasional Texture Issue

I'm just curious as it rarely effects my game and a quick quit and re-start corrects it....but once in a while the female body I use (CHSBHC) comes up as a solid black, does anyone know what may be causing this?

It's probably just Skyrim's memory leaks and wholes causing it, the code for Skyrim, if viewed pictorially, would look something like a cheese grater, so you can pretty much expect some problems after a few hours of play when running any mods

A lack of RAM could cause this. I remember it was much more common before the patch that added 4GB support, which is why I asked if you had the latest version of Skyrim. If you have less than 4GB of RAM, that could easily result in black textures when using mods like CBBE, or anything else that raises texture resolutions to higher values than Bethesda anticipated.

The simplest answer would be to upgrade RAM, if that's viable for your pc, and if you have 4GB or less. Skyrim can only use 4GB, but your operating system will take almost half of that for itself. Ideally you would want at least 6GB to ensure that both your operating system and Skyrim have plenty to work with. I'm planning on upgrading to 8GB myself.

Another answer would be to ignore it and restart the game when the problem comes up.

A possible third option would be to type PCB in the console every hour or so. It might help, but I don't have confirmation on that.

My PC was upgraded about 6 weeks ago and I know it started off with 4GB, but am quite sure that was upgraded, not sure how much by though, plus a new Graphics Card and a number of other things....running Skyrim before that had been a nightmare, constant CTD's, purple and yellow textures, stuttering, etc...Now the PC purrs.... ...with only this odd black texture issue happening once in a while, funnily enough this black texture was not present before the upgrade....As I mentioned, a quick quit and re-start rectifies the black texture and it's not harming my game play, just more so a curious 'why?'...am just endeavoring to learn about PC's and Gaming on them as I am very much a noob in both departments....I'm thinking it may well be as simple as Perraine suggests.

I had pink and black textures constantly before the 4GB patch, and none since then. I'd assume they're related, though if you have more than 4GB of RAM I don't know for sure why you're still seeing the problem. These might help...

This is from a CBBE troubleshooting page:

Q: Why am I getting black body textures after playing for a while?

A: The longer you play, the more RAM/VRAM gets used up. After a while of playing, especially if you use higher-res textures such as CBBE, there isn't enough RAM/VRAM to load the textures. This was a very common issue at the beginning of Skyrim modding, before the 4GB mod and BethSoft's LAA patch. It is recommended you have a decent video card and more than 4GB RAM to help prevent this from happening. If you can't, then simply restarting Skyrim should solve the issues for a while.

In addition, here's a quote from the Nexus poster called Reducer:

A2: The body textures weren't saved with mipmaps originally, which can cause the body textures to go black. You can fix this yourself if you have Photoshop/GIMP with a .dds plugin, or Paint.NET. Open up the files, then save as 8:8:8 RGB, with generate mipmaps enabled. You could also save the colour textures as DXT1 (no alpha) to make the file a little smaller/'compressed'. Or, wait until Caliente releases an update with mipmaps on the textures."

Hmmm...reading this, I am wondering now if it maybe an inherent issue with the CHSBHC Body.....considering this female nude was one of the early mods released and seems to be a now defunct mod, maybe the mod itself wasn't updated after the Bethsoft patch...could that cause this issue?

If the author never added mipmaps, I suppose. It's possible to add them yourself pretty easily, as long as you get Paint.NET. It's free, so getting it shouldn't be a problem. If nothing else, you could try to generate mipmaps and rule out the possibility of it being a mod problem.

Back your stuff up, and there's really no downside to trying.
