SSE Keeps Crashing on Bethesda Screen

Everytime I start the game, it crashes right after the Bethesda logo shows. The screen turns black and then I see my desktop. I am running the Steam version of SSE, and I have already turned off the cloud function. I have Nexus Mod Manager, Loot, Wrye Bash, and SSE Edit installed (although I have no idea what to do with the latter two once I open them. I read the instructions for them, but it is so techincal and makes no sense to me).

Nexus Mod Manager won't let me login in, saying, "Cannot reach the Nexus login server. Either your firewall is blocking NMM or the login server is down." I do not have a firewall installed on my PC. I have AVG, whch I turned off, restarted Nexus and tried logging in again, where I got the same message.

 

What am I doing wrong?
