thieves guild, dark brotherhood

Call me naive but I am having a hard time getting into the Thieves Guild quest line and I haven't even considered the Dark Brotherhood.

I just can't bring myself to beat up or kill people simply to further the aims of the Guild and that sleazy bunch. The whole idea repels me.

What are the pros and cons of not pursuing these quests? I'm level 32 and have been putting this off and staying out of Riften for about 20 levels.

I think the guild is more pre-modern Mafia relative. As for what I feel... I love the Dark Brotherhood but i cant get into the Thieves Guild. I have attempted to see it from a role player aspect but even than Ill start Goldenglow Estate and leave it for the rest of the game.. Only uses is Fences but I do want the Nightingale Armor and holding off the returning of the Skeleton Key would be fun

My Pros: the Dark Brotherhood is great for roleplay and gold. You get great assassin Armor. Radiant Quest

My Pros Thieves Guild: many Radiant Quest. Good way for Gold if your desperate. Bedlams are easy for Gold. Engaging questline.

My Cons: the Dark Brotherhood is the same as before.. Three survivors and a follower.(s).. I hate the small group.. I still want more npcs in there and Encounters(By this I mean quests that are random but make you sacrifice your personal gain. killing named NPCs ect). And being able to recruit anyone(Preferably Followers)..

The TG questline is OK I guess, and the Nightingale portion is pretty cool (and, yep, their is a mod/cheat that gives you the PERK/Reward for doing all 15000, or whatever it is, radiant jobs) ... The DB one just plain sucks AFAIK, that 2 faced b%@&h Astid annoys me for a start and then Cicero :wallbash: I absolutely HATE Cicero, he makes my FUS RO DAH itch every time he opens his mouth! And there really isn't any great benefits, except maybe the frightened way guards talk about the DB afterwards

The only real advantage to the TG that I see is the ability to have access to merchants with a ton of gold and sell anything to any of them without having to stroll down and spend a single perk in the Speech tree.

What merchants are those? Or are you talking about fences?

Fences, but they are essentially merchants if you never sell stolen goods anyway.

I've had playthoughs where the only thing I did for the TG was unlock those fences - left the rest of their main questline alone.

Without doing a detailed walkthrough, how did you do that? What quests within the TG quest do I avoid?

Just do the the entire Special Quests line - the ones where you talk to Delvin and Vex and travel to the major holds to unlock them.

Added: Once you do that, talk to Tonila and do the side quest to open up the Khajiit Caravans to fencing items too.

Leave the entire main line alone, i.e. don't go to Goldenglow Estate.

Never did the thieves guild or Dark Brotherhood quest lines. Thieves Guild is unlikely (I might suffer through it if that means a way to turn Brunjolf non-essential so I can kill him). But the Dark Brotherhood is tempting if only to get access to those gloves that double your backstabbing damage.

I might join their guilds if only to find ways to destroy them (after I snag those gloves).
