Okay so when I say this is a work-in-progress, I mean this is literally in the very first stages of its development and won't be out for a long time. Everything is subject to change and feedback is more than welcome. The name for the mod hasn't even been decided because I want something that's both appealing to downloaders but also not in any way spoilerish. What it does: Unlocks Father as a potential companion and/or settler after you beat the Main Quest if you meet certain conditions. In order to accomplish this, you will get a side-quest at the relevant point of the story to create a cure for Father's cancer. Basically you can access this quest as soon as you find out Father has cancer and you will have a short window to acquire it. There MAY be more than one type of cure, I had 2 or maybe 3 basic ideas in mind: 1. regular version2. mutant serum version (cure cancer but also turns the target into a super mutant over time, perhaps obtained as a last resort if you fail the first quest, or perhaps your way of punishing Father for what he did in his life without killing him)3. improved cure version (reverses Father's aging from 60 to 20-30ish) You can give him the cure in his final hours, but you'll only see the results after the MQ is over (Sole Survivor assumes the cure didn't work as it would be significantly more difficult to create an alternate ending cutscene). If you give him the cure (or perhaps swap out his medicine/food without his knowledge or consent, this also remains to be determined exactly how the cure is delivered to him and when), you will encounter him again in Vault 111 near where your game spouse died, in his new form as well if you added mutant serum or anti-aging. If you destroyed the Institute, he'll reveal he escaped before the blast once the cure took effect, he'll still be pissed but a hard speech check can still get him to join. (If you both made him a mutant AND destroyed the Institute, he will be even harder to convince.)If you sided with the Institute, he reveals he stepped down as Director anyway and faked his death (sabotaged a medical pod to malfunction so people would assume it was either an accident or he committed suicide by vaporizing himself) in order to experience his final years "differently". This way the mod won't require a new ending cutscene or changing 100 dialogs. Perhaps if you save him only in his old man form he only becomes a settler instead and you basically just choose a settlement for him to retire on and live out his final years. If you make him a mutant or make him young again, he'll become a fighting companion like Piper or Codsworth. Or perhaps he doesn't care if he's old, he's fight alongside you anyway.
