Michlo
Greetings community, I'm starting a seperate thread about my problem as I think it is buried in the official mod thread. My problem being, I've lost my Ruin! He wandered off when I wasn't looking and eventually I had to go and read the FAQ. There, I discovered that he was merely looking out for me and trying to resolve his problems by himself. I THINK he was supposed to leave me a journal or something to let me know this but he didn't, that *censored*. Anyway, I've scoured Cheydinal, especially the place he is supposed to be (the hill near the church as you face towards the castle) but he is nowhere to be found. I made sure that Ruin was loading after my Better Cities mod and this didn't help so I even tried deactivating it. No joy. So, does anybody know his formID or any other console command that might reunite us please? Cheers.
aaronjreeves
Heres one way to do it... 1) load a old save with him in it, then click on him in the console.1.5) If you dont have a old save then make a new character and find him then click on him in the console 2) reload your current save and use "player.moveto <ID>" and you will be right next to him. I dont know if you getting to him is what will fix your problem or if you need the journal but this is a solution!

I'll let you know if it works, I think it should. :) Kudos to you. Cheers.

He was hanging about in Skingrad for some reason. heh. Thanks again, mate, you were a great help. Cheers.
Michlo
Bah, it seems I've developed a new problem now. Ruin finally did his proper vanishing act last night, leaving me the journal and all. I went and met up with him and we defeated his attackers and I got the three scrolls . Since then, I keep on getting a CTD at random intervals. I know it seems unlikely to be related but I've not added anything else and this only happened since the above. I'm going to try playing an earlier save game tonight just to be sure but since I'm stuck at work I thought I'd see if anybody else experienced this and had a solution. :) Cheers. Michlo
Greetings, it looks like all is well that ends well. :) I tried another save game for a while with no CTDs so I determined it had to be a conflict after the Ruin fight. This time, I decided to temporarily disable Better Cities and Tears of the Fiend since they both interfere with the fight location. I can't say for sure that this was the necessary resolution of course but I've had no further CTDs so I hope this might help someone else. Cheers. aaronjreeves
Well what was happening was that your mods were conflicting causing CTD's... i used to get these all the time but i figured out what was going on and an easy fix... First you need OBMM which is Oblivion Mod Manager, even if you dont use the special mods formatted for it, it still can edit your load order. the load oder is what oblivion uses at start up to determine how your game will run. the farther DOWN the list a mod (esp file) is, the later the prgram will run, overwriting other conflicting programs. TOFT is a major cullprite with this because it is so intrusive on your game, only because its a big mod. SO i would recommend moving this HIGHER (if your not currently doing it, like when your done) and moving your current quest lower. the reason for this is because when a mod is lower ont he list it will overwrite the one loaded before it, meaning that if you try to use a "conflicted mod" (meaning a mod that was overwritten by a mod lower on the list) the game will most likey CTD at one point, which is exactly what was happening in your case. Anyways with the mod manager you can change your load oder to keep those CTD's away for good. Just change it every time you start a new mod. Lower the new mod to the bottom and raise up a older mod your not using as much (or progressing through). Hope this helps!

Aaron, even though I do use the wonderful OBMM and I did know all of that, I'm giving you a kudo for such a helpful response. :) Thank you very much. Also, I spoke too soon last night. heh. My short game before work today had me experiencing the dreaded CTDs again unfortunately. I'm definitely going to be looking at my load order once again. I had been using that helper tool (I can't think of its name here at work) but I'm not sure how accurate it is since it doesn't recognize all of the mods. Anyway, thank you again, I'm sure this is all useful info for others too. Cheers. Edit: drat, apparently I can't give you another point. It only asks if I want to take away the one I already gave you! heh. Thanks, though.
aaronjreeves
Yeah no problem... But also random CTD's are apperantly -normal- in oblivion... what isnt normal is a CTD in a specific place (example: while exiting a mod related out or talking to a specific person), so i tend to break CTD's into to categories: 1) CTD at specific place or location CURE: Change load order, put current quest (the one giving you CTD's) at bottom 2) Random Crash CURE: Curse god for making humans imperfect ;P then restart oblivion 3) very very frequent crashes with very slow game/lagging CURE: Either a bad mod (try #2) or Re-Install oblivion. The reason for a reinstall is because many mods change crucial files needed for oblivion to run, and if you use a mod overwriting a nessisary file and then that mod ends up being a bad mod then unless you have a backup of every file that mod over wrote then a reinstall is needed. Ive found moving all the mods out my data folder and reinstalling oblivion and reactivating them really ups the reliablity of my game. less crashes, higher frame rate, and better graphics without slowdown
