MagicRainbowElf
Right, upon the hardcore prompt the game immediately crashes with the error in the image when selecting either option, completely vanilla game, not even using NVSE, I've tried doing everything i can and hunting around the net for a solution, unofficial patches, system updates the whole works and I've got nothing. I don't even have aby idea at all for what is actually causing this crash. Usually I'm pretty good at working s*** like this out, i managed to mod fallout3 up to the eyeballs and get it running flawlessly and that thing is like a demented haemophiliac dog with performance anxiety. Just spitfire any possible solutions to me and I'll try em Edit: can't upload the image, it's a generic runtime error, but it always appears after selecting either option at the hardcore prompt Edited August 8, 2018 by MagicRainbowElf
dubiousintent
* You should read the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article for the differences between this game and FO4. * Did you run the "FalloutNVLauncher.exe" first and let it detect your hardware and set your level of graphics detail? That builds your "Users" folder INI files. You only need to run it once. Thereafter you just run the "FalloutNV.exe". * Did you check the Windows "Event Viewer"? Please see the "Windows Error Messages" section of the wiki "How to read most Bethesda game error logs" article. * Did you install Steam to it's default location? If so, please see the wiki "Installing Games on Windows Vista+" article for why the original default Steam behavior of installing games to the "C:\Program Files" folder tree was bad (they learned better, and don't do that any more); and why "disabling UAC and running as Administrator" is NOT sufficient, with instructions how to move it. This is the single most important thing you can do to fix and protect yourself against problems in the future. As much of a PITA as that is, it's never going to be any easier than now. System updates often cause issues with games installed to these folder trees. Please see the 'Restoring to "Vanilla"' section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article as well. * Please see 'Solutions to Starting the game problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide. -Dubious-
MagicRainbowElf
I've looked through that stuff before and there's nothing about the crash, I'm utterly stumped by what I'm experiencing, I'm also running the GOG version of the game which i forgot to add to the original post so no errors with messing around with steam, I've already had plenty of experience modding this already and stuff it's just now all of a sudden this issue keeps on happening, last time i installed new vegas i never once had this issue
dubiousintent
Well, the game itself hasn't changed in at least the last 4 years (since the last patch whenever that was), so that leaves either the OS or some driver updates. The mere fact of a CTD just means something neither the game nor the OS could deal with occurred, and the "Windows Event Viewer" log entry is probably going to be the only clue unless you can get the substance of any displayed error message. As this is happening when you select "HardCore" mode, that means the game is attempting to update the INI files in the "Users" folder and the "Default" INI in the game folder. Make sure they are NOT "Read Only", and look to see if the following "[General]" settings are changed from "1" to "0".bForceReloadOnEssentialCharacterDeath=0bEssentialTakeNoDamage=0Those are the only settings I have found to indicate "HardCore" mode is active. I realize that is the only time you get to activate HC, but you might try skipping that as a test just to see if you can get outside. You may want to try installing the 'Essentials for Getting Started' mods from the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" article. Without some additional information to go on, afraid we are limited to what has already been suggested. -Dubious-
MagicRainbowElf
Can confirm that that the ini is not read only, and as i said it occurs whether i choose yes or no to activating hardcore, I'm gonna try to see if i can skip the prompt all together by using a mod or something, I'll also manually configure the ini like you suggested, thanks for the help
