firsTraveler
I'm just using housecarls as followers and the four I have so far are all fighters of one style or another. I'd like to try a magic user. Are there any? And can followers learn new spells? thx
AstralFire
There are a few, though they're kind of annoying to use (including difficulty to get to wear upgrades that don't include armor). Erandur at Dawnstar/Nightcaller Temple, J'zargo, Brelyna and Onmund at the College of Winterhold, and there's a few more scattered over Skyrim - but those are some of the easiest to get since they're near a major hold. Erandur's probably the single easiest and is one of the more interesting ones, to boot. Ultimate Follower Overhaul allows you to teach followers new spells, though be warned that custom spells from player mods won't work terribly well with that. (One reason why mine doesn't use the standard teaching system - harder to mix that up.) Edited June 2, 2012 by AstralFire

AstralFire
...He wears simple monk's robes and your first thought is "this man looks like he should be going Conan on some fools?" Erandur is talented in Restoration and Destruction. Edited June 2, 2012 by AstralFire
kevkiev
The Dunmer mage up at Azura's shrine is pretty good too (can't remember her name).
stabbykitteh
There's Marcurio in Riften's Bee and Barb as well. He can be hired for 500 gold and he's a pretty potent destruction mage.
Kilo68
To be honest,I wasn't that big on magic before I got rid of Skyrim, and giving him armor and a mace kept him close-by in-case one of the enemies decided to use him as a sheath.

Not the first thing that makes me think "Hulk Smash!" He even casts Destruction spells extensively during the quest you have to do before he gives you the option to use him as a follower.
