Issues With Forcing Vsync

Hey all, silly topic and question. I tend to disable presentinterval, new vegas' default vsync, in the inis because it leads to massive frame rate drops and lag, as if conflicting with something else vsync/fps limiter related, and I have no clue who the culprit is. Sadly, of course screen tearing is still prevalent, so instead I opted for forcing it through my Nvidia control panel and inspector, hoping to see better results. Thing is, theres no vsync at all when I do it this way, uncapped framerate and nothings changed, and New Vegas seemingly just totally ignores me forcing it. An alternative im pretty sour about is NVSR's fps management mode, stuttering and screen tearing ensues with that on, so now I'm sort of left with no options. One of my theories, (excuse this, I have the tech skills of a neanderthal sometimes haha), is that OneTweak's borderless mode is interfering somehow. I've always heard borderless automatically has Vsync or something of the sort, dwm forces it on so it applies to the game too apparently of course, but like I said I have little to no knowledge on that. I'll try fiddling around with fullscreen, windowed and switching between various modes and disabling onetweak in a couple of hours, worth a shot at this point, if OT is indeed the culprit that'd be a shame. Its such a luxury, can't live without it sometimes.

Appreciate it fellas, just a small annoyance I've encountered. Hoping to clean it up, thank you guys.

This is not a simple "single solution for all systems" issue. You need to start with an understanding of what Vsync is intended to accomplish. Please see 'Issue: Vsync (V-Sync) ON or OFF' entry under the 'Solutions to Performance problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

That section of the "Troubleshooting" guide has several related entries to the FPS drop, lag, and screen tearing issues. (You've mentioned most of them.) But they are not individual solutions: they need to work together along with your particular combination of hardware and software. You are going to have to experiment with various combinations. Perhaps if you posted your video card and monitor specs someone might be able to advise you, but you need to also consider other software factors such as whether or not you are using a "post-processor" such as ENB or SweetFX, display resolution and image size (see the wiki "Display resolution versus Image Size" article, etc.. Because these solutions usually have various optional settings, it takes more than simply installing an app and assuming it will automatically fix your problem with it's default settings. That is not something we can do for you.

OTOH, the more you understand about how your system works, the easier it is to apply that knowledge to the similar problems in your next game. And to guide your choices when you have to replace components.

Thank you for your response Dubious! I've used the Nexus wiki several times in the past, always have it bookmarked with the TTW performance guide and such, and its always been a big help for most of my issues, and I decided to look at this section more thoroughly and ended up being a huge help once again. Took the time to read up on the VSYNC article thats posted in the section and realized that the issue is my general lack of understanding and knowledge when it comes to how VSYNC works that led to this stupid topic haha, so excuse me for this. With some tweaking, experimentation and reading I've figured it out for the most part, I'm happy to say. Next time I have an issue, gotta remind myself to scan over the page, always helps.
