SSE ESP vs ESL what are the pros and cons

I've been looking for information on ESL files but I'm not having much luck finding it.

 

I would like to know if there is any good reason to look into creating mods using ESLs instead of ESPs and if so how would I make the switch?

And the general consensus seems to be that there are a lot of negatives and not too many positives.

After looking at that thread, I've come to the conclusion that ESLs are a massive cluster of mess and I seriously hope they don't become standard in the future if Beth is going to keep such a structure.
