Magic tree superior to the others?

Recommended Posts

I forget which version of the game I'm using, it hasn't been updated in a few months, and I don;'t have EE. But magic + grabbing every bit of vigor I could from the top tree seemed like the way to go if you just wanted to destroy everything. Quen was really good in chapter 1-2 but in chapter 3+ it dropped in 1 hit by most mobs, and even then it was a good tool to use for hit and retreat tactics which saved my bacon in some fights I would have certainly got destroyed in. Also starting in Chapter 3, Igni was starting to decimate pretty much everything, those armored human mobs that would take 50 hits to down with a sword got dropped by 3 igni, so I could take out a whole group with just 3 vigor, eliminating my need to rely on Quen so much. I would just roll/retreat back and kite them and stuff them in the face with Ignis. For normal difficulty I only used Quen + Igni, the other ones just didn't fit my play style, even though I am certain there are some great ways to implement them. I wanted my Witcher to be a Warrior/Mage type. Also heliotrope once I got it was pretty devastating, and it seemed in the long fights I'd always build up adrenaline enough to re-cast it before the first one would drop down. Someone would have to be braindead to get hit by mobs caught in heliotrope. Also I almost never used potions, except for a cats eye in that cave in chapter 3 which was pitch black.

Anyway I'm getting ready to do a dark mode game, is there any reason I should go with putting points in the other trees, or should I just stick with the same thing? Quen + igni? Will that strategy work for me in Dark mode?
