GenkiM
Monitoring 16Gb and 32Gb systems I have never seen Fallout 4 use more than 4Gb system RAM even at the point of forced crashes running massive uGrids or hundreds of active NPCs. But, no need to let inconvenient facts get in the way of upgrade spending if Mhz and DDR brings you joy. Yeah, I kind of came to the conclusion that it wasn't the amount of RAM that was the problem. However RAM speed actually does seem to matter with Fallout, if you're CPU's the bottleneck, and IIRC, if you've got a fast enough graphics card to let the CPU Bottleneck (which I believe means having to play at 1080p?)... ...which means, I actually have a usage case for faster RAM.... :D Also, got an open box AIO cooler on its way to me. It turns out my CPU is potentially a really good overclocker but I've got as far as I can with my air-cooling solution. P.S. Just waiting for payl0ad to post telling me I'm doing it all wrong. ;P Nah dude, OCing your CPU giving you a decent FPS boost is precisely what I expected. You're bottlenecked on the CPU, not by core count but rather by raw clock rate. You were right, I had no idea that was what it was, thanks so much for pointing that out, it's really improved my gaming experience. I basically spent yesterday and today learning how to manually overclock my CPU, so now I'm back to playing around with FO4 mods. Hi You only need more ram if Windows starts to complain... Yeah, I'm definitely not planning on upgrading to 16GB for FO4, since it really doesn't seem to need it, although I am tempted for stuff like Batman Arkham Knight. But are you sure about FO4 not being memory speed sensitive? I found an article that reported it actually responded really well to faster memory: https://wccftech.com/fallout-4-performance-heavily-influenced-by-ram-speed-according-to-report/ ? I didn't get any problems playing it with an overclock so maybe I was lucky. And yeah, I've been learning about load line calibration and voltage spikes. It seems overclocks can really shock your processor. Edited September 1, 2018 by GenkiM
icestormng
...leads me to the question of how I can accurately monitor my RAM usage, given that the performance tab of Windows Task Manager has turned out to be so unreliable... Well, the ram usage of the game itself doesn't matter as much as the total ram usage. If your game uses 4GB and your system has 8GB you should be fine as long as you don't have other programs that eat your ram. You may want to install MSI afterburner and use the overlay which shows the total ram usage of your system. If your usage goes over 7,5GB RAM then you might need more ram. If it always stays under 7 GB, I don't see a problem there. Fallout 4 doesn't spread the CPU load well across all cores. If one core is fully loaded, this will bottleneck everything else.Look at this video here. The same CPU and about 70FPS on maxed out graphics. Your CPU should be more than fast enough. It is probably a little faster than mine in terms of single core speed and on my system the GPUs are the bottleneck, but at 61FPS 99% of the time. High CPU load can also be caused by AV software that runs in the background. If so, you want to set FO4 to be excluded. A friend of mine doubled the framerate of different game just by disabling the AV software. Btw. What are your graphics settings? There are some options that will easily cause slowdowns. Especially in Boston where the area is dense... I hope this helps you...
