Moonmaiden37
I've encountered another problem. This time in naming my dog. I fixed it once before by uninstalling DAO, but I don't want to do that each time I encounter a problem. It is when I'm a human, this time. (before it was anyone.) I have one with my elf, and had no problem naming him. I even exited the game and then went back in, but I still couldn't name my dog. I would appreciate any assistance I could get with this problem. Thank you.
naomis8329
Are you saying that when you get the opportunity to name Dog it doesn't come up ie the box to type the name in??
Moonmaiden37
Yes, that's right. It just gives the codex for dogs in Ferelden and then goes on with the fight with the rats.
naomis8329
hmm, not sure as I don't remember having that problem before. Have you tried checking mods and their load order in case they are interfering somehow?
Thandal
This is a known bug with no good solution if you've already played past the Prologue and don't want to start over, (except for using the Toolset, if you're willing to open your saved game and dig around...) Here's a good summary from another site's forums: BigFish31 (Topic Creator) Posted 12/12/2009 4:17:29 PM I have encountered a weird bug. I am starting a new human noble rogue and it won't let me name my dog. I started over three times and it happened every time. I get him just fine, but I never get the option to change his name, he is just "Dog" by default. I have the respec and party chest mods installed, but I disabled them both and this still happened, so I doubt it's that. Has anyone else encountered this? What's going on? -------------------------------------- supertouchme Posted 12/12/2009 4:36:42 PM i'm pretty sure you only get the option to change the dog's name if you rescue him from ostagar-------------------------------------- Xeteh Posted 12/12/2009 4:38:46 PM Thats not true, I've played the Human Noble Origin 5 or so times, sometimes it lets me name the dog and other times it doesn't. -------------------------------------- BigFish31 (Topic Creator) Posted 12/12/2009 4:58:19 PM Upon further investigation, I have found a workaround. It seems to be dependent upon what you say to him when you first open the larder. If you tell him he's smart, you can name him, if you ask him if he's trying to tell you something, you can't. That is still obviously a bug, but one that is fortunately easy to work around. So, problem solved. Thanks for the input -------------------------------------- Sychosis Posted 12/12/2009 5:12:11 PM I've asked him if he was trying to tell me something plenty of times before. I've only hit that bug once. To fix it, all I did was exit to desktop, and restart the game. -------------------------------------- Tripwolf Posted 12/12/2009 5:24:10 PM Clearly your Dog isnt as smart as mine. ;) (Side Note: Unlike with Gamebryo, "Load Order" is meaningless to the Eclipse game engine.) Moonmaiden37
I have had no problem before in naming my dog. Even with the mods. All my problems started two weeks ago, when I had a mini crash while playing the game. Everything seemed to be okay, then I couldn't access Bohdn's shop. Then naming my dog and culminating with the party picker problem. I uninstalled DAO and then reinstalled it, that fixed both the shop and dog naming, but I still had problems with the party-picker. Now that is working, and I had no problem naming the dog as an elf. It's when I started a new game as a human, that I'm having the problem. I have had my game for nearly two years, and have played as a human before and had no problem whatsoever naming the dog. My son has told me that mods do a lot of funny things to the game, but I can't imagine playing without them now. I will try your suggestions though and let you know what happens. Also I don't know too much about the toolset. I'm not very good at the technical side of computing and games, so I wouldn't know what to look for in that side of things. Thandal
@Moonmaiden; Oh no, no no. I only mentioned the Toolset solution to be 100% accurate. You do NOT want to go messing about with that if you are, as you say, "not very good at the technical side of computing". The Toolset is all about the technical side of computing. What I was trying to say is that there really is no way around the issue except starting over, and being careful (meaning "slow, and letting every dialogue and scene finish completely before moving to the next one") until you've passed the "Meet Dog in the Kitchens" point. Just think of the name "Dog" as one of those quirky, foreign names which had already been attached to this particular Mabari when you received him.
naomis8329
to be honest I tend to look at mods first and disable them all and then reinstate them one by one until the culprit(s) is found and dealt with. Sometimes it can be something really silly and unexpected. Bear with it and you will get to the bottom of it I'm sure.
Moonmaiden37
Thank you everyone. I found it was a mod. The "No more barking" one. It made dog take a nap when he was supposed to be wagging his tail and barking, just before the conversation with him started. I removed it and then I could name him. It is a huge relief to know it was that simple. It is a pity that that particular mod causes that problem, because it is useful to have dog not barking all the time. Again thank you one and all, and don't worry I never mess with the technical side of things, I usually get my son, who knows what he's doing most of the time, to do things like that, otherwise I leave well alone.
naomis8329
Good to know hun, glad its sorted. Like I said for most things its usually a mix of conflicting mods or more than one chargen files that make the game go nuts. Glad you got it sorted and are bearing with the game, The series is a treasure and, if you can, get the books that go with it, they are amazing too :D Have fun and let us know what you think of itNaomi
